10 Best New Movies & Shows to Stream
It’s mid-October, which means we’re smack dab in the middle of spooky season — and streamers know it.
This weekend, Oct. 18-19, we’ve got three projects based on infamous true crimes, ranging from a killer clown to a lawyer-turned-murderer. To lighten the load, a Maya Rudolph-led comedy is back for its third season on Apple TV, while a more serious political drama returns to Netflix.
Over on network TV, CBS is premiering its full slate of shows, from favorites like another Young Sheldon spinoff to a brand new police procedural.
And there’s more! Here’s a list of the 10 best new movies and shows to watch this weekend and where to stream them.
After the Hunt
As Julia Roberts so succinctly puts it in the movie’s trailer, not everything is supposed to make you feel comfortable. And Challengers director Luca Guadagnino‘s After the Hunt certainly won’t.
Roberts is a professor at a college who has to navigate a serious situation when a student infatuated with her, Maggie (Ayo Edebiri), accuses her colleague and good friend Hank (Andrew Garfield) of assault.
After the Hunt releases in theaters on Oct. 17.
Good Fortune
Careful what you wish for — or don’t be, apparently.
When guardian angel Gabriel (Keanu Reeves) is assigned to help Arj (Aziz Ansari), a down-on-his-luck guy living out of his car, out of his rut, he decides to take his expertise a step further and has him switch lives with tech billionaire Jeff (Seth Rogen), thinking it’ll show Arj that money isn’t always the answer. However, sometimes it is … and now Arj doesn’t want to go back.
Good Fortune releases in theaters on Oct. 17.
Murdaugh: Death in the Family
In 2023, Alex Murdaugh, a disgraced South Carolina lawyer, was convicted of over 20 financial crimes and of the 2021 murders of his wife Maggie and son Paul. Two years later, the Murdaugh family is back in the spotlight in Murdaugh: Death in the Family.
The fictionalized docudrama stars Jason Clarke as Alex and Patricia Arquette as Maggie and delves into the downfall of one of South Carolina’s most prolific families.

Devil In Disguise: John Wayne Gacy
John Wayne Gacy seemed like an upstanding citizen, husband and father. But he led a double life as a Killer Clown, murdering over two dozen young boys and men between 1972 and 1978.
The serial killer confessed to his crimes in 1978 and was convicted of 33 murders. Now, Severance‘s Michael Chernus is bringing Gacy’s crimes to the small screen in a limited series.

The Perfect Neighbor
In June 2023, Susan Lorincz, a White woman, shot and killed her neighbor, Ajike “AJ” Shantrell Owens, who was Black, after the latter came up to her door to confront her for allegedly throwing a roller skate at her 10-year-old son.
Police body cam footage recreates the months that led up to the tragic shooting, reconstructing the tale of a woman who frequently complained about the neighborhood’s kids and hurled racial slurs at them before claiming the life of one of their mothers.
