26 Years Later, Brendan Fraser’s Cult Classic Fantasy Action Film Is a Streaming Hit in America
After winning the Best Actor Oscar for The Whale, Brendan Fraser‘s career has found incredible new life, putting smiles on the faces of a global audience of cinephiles. Next month, Fraser will be back with another performance already praised by critics in director Hikari‘s Rental Family, his first lead role since The Whale‘s triumph. Described as “the kind of role that we haven’t really seen from Fraser before, but it is a perfect fit for him,” in Collider’s review of the film, the excitement is certainly building for Fraser’s next top performance, so much so that a cult classic turn from the Oscar winner is leading the streaming charts in America.
26 years since it was first released, Stephen Sommers’ The Mummy, which stars Fraser alongside Rachel Weisz and John Hannah, is the most-streamed movie on Tubi in the U.S. at the time of writing. Although the film was met with mixed reviews upon arrival, this fast-paced fantasy adventure has gained cult-classic status since and become a fond favorite of many devoted fans. This is highlighted on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, with a mixed 63% score from critics overshadowed by a strong 75% from audiences. The movie was a hit at the 1999 box office, turning a reported production budget of $80 million into a global haul of $422 million. For those yet to catch the film, here’s a look at the synopsis:
“The Mummy is a rousing, suspenseful and horrifying epic about an expedition of treasure-seeking explorers in the Sahara Desert in 1925. Stumbling upon an ancient tomb, the hunters unwittingly set loose a 3,000-year-old legacy of terror, which is embodied in the vengeful reincarnation of an Egyptian priest who had been sentenced to an eternity as one of the living dead.”
What Else Is Popular on Tubi?

This includes, in tenth place, Gerard Butler‘s Olympus Has Fallen, Robert Rodriguez’s vampire movie From Dusk Till Dawn at #9, and Clint Eastwood‘s political thriller Absolute Power at #8. Dwayne Johnson‘s critically panned Skyscraper is at #7, with Saw II proving a horror favorite at #6, and Sandra Bullock’s fantasy romance film Practical Magic at #5. SuperFly is at #4, with Breaking In at #3, Kevin Costner‘s forgotten action flick The Guardian at #2, and The Mummy in first place.
