It: Welcome to Derry Episode 3’s “scary” trailer connects to Stephen King’s two best works
The trailer for It: Welcome to Derry Episode 3 keeps things creepy as it bridges the gap between two of Stephen King’s best books.
The prequel horror series is doing an excellent job so far of adding extra context and mystery to Pennywise’s (Bill Skarsgard) previous hunts. Our review says the show “widens the story of the titular town (and clown), alongside the brutal uncompromising violence it inflicts on the entire cast.”
Andy Muschietti has made sure that horror fans are well fed with jump scares, gory set pieces, and references to the wider King universe that the show takes place in.
But the trailer for It: Welcome to Derry Episode 3 drops the biggest Easter eggs yet and references two much-loved books by King.
It: Welcome to Derry Episode 3 ties into The Shining and The Shawshank Redemption
Fans familiar with King’s work will already know that the show features Dick Hallorann (Chris Chalk), who later becomes the chef at the Overlook Hotel from The Shining, where he meets Danny Torrance and recognizes that the young boy has psychic abilities.
The teaser footage from It: Welcome to Derry Episode 3 explicitly mentions that the military is aware of Hallorann’s abilities and are using them to try find the entity that calls itself Pennywise. However, the trailer also makes a reference to The Shawshank Redemption.
It shows Hank Grogan (Stephen Rider) in jail because the police suspect the projectionist is the one responsible for killing the kids in the wildly gory theater massacre at the end of the first episode. Chief Bowers (Peter Outerbridge) tells him, “Do you know what they do to kiddie killers in Shawshank?” which is an obvious reference to the titular prison from The Shawshank Redemption.
Interestingly, Bowers is also a reference to Muschietti’s IT movies, because he’s the grandfather of Henry Bowers, the bully who frequently attacks the Losers Club and eventually becomes Pennywise’s pawn. Clearly It: Welcome to Derry Episode 3 isn’t trying to hide its wider connections to King’s universe.
For now, fans are celebrating the new teaser and the show itself, with one writing, “It’s my very first time watching a horror… It’s really good and scary, I’m glad there is no hideous gore.”
“The first two episodes were so good, but this one looks absolutely PHENOMENAL,” said another, while a third quipped, “This episode will shine.”
But until we see more about what the show has planned for Pennywise, take a look at our theory that the show might connect to The Mist, what you need to know about the surprising DC Easter eggs in the premiere, and our ranking of the best Stephen King movies.
