Paving the way for her community, the actor spoke up about wanting to represent her fellow transgender individuals
Bonita Rajpurohit, Bollywood’s first transgender actor, is set to star in Love Sex Aur Dhoka 2, releasing in cinemas on April 19, reported The Indian Express. Helmed by producer Ekta Kapoor and director Dibakar Banerjee, the film offers a brutally honest perspective of the entertainment industry through the eyes of the transgender protagonist, Kulu, played by Bonita.
Production company Balaji Motion Pictures took to Instagram to release an emotional video of Bonita opening up about her struggles before she was able to break into Bollywood. “I worked at a production house where I used to earn just Rs10k,” she confessed in the video. “It was hard to survive.”
Bonita spoke about how, early on, she found herself relating to transgender characters portrayed on screen. “I learned I matter through films,” she admitted. Acting as a representative of her transgender community, Bonita added, “My biggest motivation is seeing women like me on screen [and to] see trans-representation on screen.”
According to Bonita, playing the protagonist in such a groundbreaking film has been life-changing. “I never thought I would land an acting role and that I would get to play a lead in a Bollywood film,” she said. “So, some dreams just come true.”
Love Sex Aur Dhoka 2 is the sequel to the thriller Love Sex Aur Dhoka, released in 2010. Since the release of the Love Sex Aur Dhoka 2 trailer on April 1, the controversial themes of the film have sparked widespread debate across Indian social media. In anticipation, director Dibakar had released a video statement as a disclaimer, warning audiences that the sequel would be even bolder than the original.
“Making ‘LSD’ and not showing the truth is not possible,” he began. “So, while making ‘LSD 2’, we portrayed the same truth, an authentic picture of life that we see all around us. But these days, instead of believing the truth, the fashion of ignoring the truth has increased.”
Ending on a damning note, Dibakar finished with, “If you are not an adult, then do not watch the ‘LSD 2’ teaser or trailer.”
Love Sex Aur Dhoka 2 explores three parallel stories depicting the repercussions of love and betrayal in the digital world of today. As well as Bonita, the film also features Uorfi Javed, Mouni Roy, Tusshar Kapoor, Anu Malik, Swaroopa Ghosh, Swastika Mukherjee Anupam Joardar and Nimrit Kaur Ahluwalia..
