A new trailer for a Batgirl movie has quickly gone viral online. Featuring Wednesday star in the lead role, the fan-made trailer has garnered more than 1.03 million views in less than five days’ time, capturing the attention of many DC fans.
Shared to YouTube by KH Studio, the trailer was cobbled together through the use of “various effects, sound design, AI technologies, movie analytics, and other elements,” per the creator. The trailer is notably created just for entertainment purposes and is not reflective of any real projects that are in the works, as Ortega is not attached to any DC project. With the faux trailer going viral, chances are that rumors of Ortega’s casting may still persist. The trailer can be watched below.
Batgirl Director Talks Disappointment in Canceled Film, DCU & Future Plans
Batgirl’s co-director is forthcoming about his disappointment in the now-canceled film but remains optimistic that it will be seen in some form.
The trailer imagines that the story is set in the DCEU, as it includes the appearances of characters like JK Simmons’ Jim Gordon and Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn. While the DCEU is now finished, this was likely done out of necessity, given how no installments of the new DCU have yet been released. There have also been no indications made as of yet about Batgirl joining any of the DCU-set projects that are now in the works.
A Batgirl Movie Was Controversially Canceled
Of course, there had already been an attempt to make a Batgirl movie that ended in disaster. Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah had co-directed a Batgirl film that featured Leslie Grace in the role. Michael Keaton’s Batman was featured in the film, which also starred Brendan Fraser as the supervillain Firefly. The film had been essentially finished and was enduring test screenings when it was suddenly shelved by Warner Bros. Discovery for tax purposes, unlikely to ever see the light of day. Even with a change in leadership at DC Studios, those plans haven’t changed, as new co-CEO Peter Safran suggested that the film was yanked due to its quality.
Batgirl Extra Sues Warner Bros. Over Devastating On-Set Motorbike Accident
An extra who suffered extensive injuries when she was struck by a motorbike on the set of Batgirl says it’d have been “easier” if she’d died.
“On the Batgirl front… I saw the movie, and there are a lot of incredibly talented people in front of and behind the camera on that film. But that film was not releasable, and it happens sometimes,” Safrain said in 2023. “That film was not releasable. I actually think that [President and CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery David] Zaslav and the team made a very bold and courageous decision to cancel it because it would have hurt DC. It would have hurt those people involved.”
