The Transformers Get Animated

Transformers One will be the first animated Transformers film since 1986’s Transformers: The Movie, which was set 20 years after the events of the original ’80s animated series. The highly-anticipated movie has been in development at Paramount since 2015 and will be the eighth installment in the studio’s Transformers franchise. At CinemaCon 2024, the first plot details for Transformers One were shared, confirming that the movie will tell the “long-awaited origin story of how the most iconic characters in the Transformers universe, Orion Pax and D-16, went from brothers-in-arms to become sworn enemies, Optimus Prime and Megatron.”

Hemsworth and Henry will voice Orion Pax and D-16, respectively, in Transformers One. Their casting was previously announced by Paramount at CinemaCon 2023 alongside the rest of the movie’s voice cast, which includes Scarlett Johansson as Elita-1, Keegan-Michael Key as B-127/Bumblebee, Jon Hamm as Sentinel Prime, and Laurence Fishburne as Alpha Trion. Steve Buscemi has also been cast, although his role remains undisclosed at this time.

40 Years of Transformers

2024 marks the 40th anniversary of the Transformers franchise, which launched in 1984 with both a toy line and an animated series. To celebrate 40 years of Transformers, Hasbro has announced several collaborations, including a Chevy Corvette Optimus Prime figure with a corresponding real-life Japanese racecar. Skybound Entertainment is releasing a new Transformers comic book while there will also be a theatrical screening of the first few episodes of the original ’80s cartoon.

As for Paramount’s film series, 2024 marks the 17th anniversary of the first live-action Transformers movie, which was directed by Michael Bay and released in theaters during the summer of 2007. Following the conclusion of Bay’s five-film Transformers series, Paramount released the standalone prequel, Bumblebee (2018). The franchise then experienced a five-year hiatus from the big screen until Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, a standalone sequel to Bumblebee, was released in 2023. Set in 1994, Rise of the Beasts follows a pair of Brooklyn archaeologists who embark on a globe-trotting adventure with the Autobots and Maximals. The franchise’s live-action timeline will be continued in a Transformers/G.I. Joe crossover movie, which was previously teased at the end of Rise of the Beasts.

Directed by Josh Cooley, Transformers One opens in theaters on Sept. 13, 2024.
