Keanu Reeves is reportedly in discussions to take on a role in renowned Swedish filmmaker Ruben Ostlund’s upcoming film, The Entertainment System Is Down. The plot details of this highly anticipated movie, from the two-time Palme d’Or winner, is yet to be revealed. Ostlund has hinted at a storyline that revolves around a social satire set aboard a long-haul flight where the entertainment system malfunctions, leading to chaos and outbursts among passengers. After gathering anecdotes for several years, Ostlund has finalised the script, promising a film that will show his trademark dark humour.

In a statement to Variety, Ostlund said, “The Entertainment System Is Down’ will be a study of how human beings interact in this little laboratory that is a plane.” He added, “It will look at how modern human beings are wrecked under these circumstances.” Ostlund, who has delivered iconic movies like Force Majeure, The Square and Triangle of Sadness, hopes that his upcoming film will cause the biggest walkout in the history of the Cannes Film Festival.

Reeves is expected to join an ensemble cast that includes many other international stars. This project will follow Ostlund’s success with Triangle of Sadness, which earned him the prestigious Palme d’Or at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival.

The film is being produced by Ostlund and Erik Hemmendorff through their banner Plattform Produktion, based in Goteborg, Sweden. Philippe Bober’s Coproduction Office is co-producing the film and will handle its international sales.

When asked about the filming location for the movie, Ostlund hinted at the possibility of an international cast, stating, “I haven’t decided yet. Once again, it’s a possibility to have an international cast because these long-haul flights always have international passengers.”

In addition to his potential role in The Entertainment System Is Down, Keanu Reeves has several other projects in the pipeline. Following his portrayal of the titular character in 2023’s John Wick: Chapter 4, Reeves will return to the big screen in December, lending his voice to the animated character Shadow the Hedgehog in Sonic the Hedgehog 3. He is also set to appear in Aziz Ansari’s upcoming movie Good Fortune, where he takes on the role of an angel.

Currently, Reeves is involved in filming Jonah Hill’s dark comedy film Outcome, with set photos revealing a new look for the actor.
