Josh Appelbaum and André Nemec to write Disney’s ‘Space Mountain’

What’s the story

Josh Appelbaum and André Nemec, the creative duo behind Amazon‘s spy series Citadel and Netflix‘s Cowboy Bebop adaptation, have been selected to write Disney’s live-action version of Space Mountain, per The Hollywood Reporter.

Known for their captivating narratives, they are set to bring their storytelling prowess to this new Disney project.

Space Mountain is a beloved space-themed indoor roller coaster that first opened at Walt Disney World Resort in Florida in 1975.

Space Mountain’s global presence and unique challenge

Space Mountain later became a key attraction in the Tomorrowland section of Disneyland in California in 1977.

The ride has since been featured in five out of six Disney parks worldwide.

However, unlike other Disney attractions such as Pirates of the Caribbean, Space Mountain lacks a central theme or iconic characters.

This presents Appelbaum and Nemec with the unique challenge of creating an entirely new narrative inspired by the ride.

The production team for ‘Space Mountain’

Jonathan Eirich from Rideback is set to produce the film. Rideback is recognized for its work on Netflix’s popular live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender series.

Joby Harold and Tory Tunnell of Safehouse Pictures are also part of the production team, with Harold previously involved as a writer.

Ryan Halprin from Rideback will serve as executive producer. The specifics of the plot remain undisclosed at this time.

More about the duo and their projects

The celebrated Hollywood duo is also known for Mission: Impossible—Ghost Protocol, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows, and Wonder Park, among others.

Their show Cowboy Bepop is structured on the 1998 Japanese anime television series and the 2001 Japanese anime film of the same name.

The sci-fi show is set in 2071.
