More than a year after he starred in Sony Pictures’ The Pope’s Exorcist, Russell Crowe is back with a new exorcism movie. Vertical has released the first trailer for the upcoming movie, which is appropriately titled The Exorcism.
Crowe stars in The Exorcism as troubled actor Anthony Miller, who begins to unravel while filming a supernatural horror film, prompting his estranged daughter, Lee (Fear Street‘s Ryan Simpkins), to wonder if he’s slipping back into his past addictions or if there’s something more sinister at play. The cast for The Exorcism also includes Sam Worthington (Avatar: The Way of Water), Chloe Bailey (Praise This), Adam Goldberg (The Equalizer), and David Hyde Pierce (Frasier). An official poster for the movie was also released and can be viewed below.
The Exorcist: Believer Sequel Gets Positive Update After Losing Director
Producer Jason Blum shares positive news on The Exorcist: Deceiver after the film lost both its director and release date.
Formerly titled The Georgetown Project, the upcoming supernatural horror movie was directed by M. A. Fortin and Joshua John Miller, who also wrote the movie’s screenplay. The Exorcism marks the duo’s second horror project together after writing the screenplay for 2015’s The Final Girls. Vertical acquired the North American rights for The Exorcism from Miramax in April 2024, with Shudder picking up pay-one rights.
The Exorcism Is Not The Pope’s Exorcist 2
Despite both starring Crowe and dealing with exorcisms, The Exorcism is not a sequel to The Pope’s Exorcist, which remains in development at Sony. The Pope’s Exorcist was based on the real-life experiences of Father Gabriele Amorth, an Italian priest who reportedly performed over 100,000 exorcisms for the Vatican. Crowe portrayed the high-profile exorcist in the 2023 movie, which, despite mixed reviews, was a commercial success, grossing $77 million worldwide from an $18 million budget.

What’s Next for Russell Crowe?
Crowe is best known for playing the title roles in Ridley Scott’s 2000 epic drama, Gladiator, and Ron Howard’s 2001 biopic, A Beautiful Mind. He has appeared in four further movies directed by Scott — A Good Year (2006), American Gangster (2007), Body of Lies (2008), and Robin Hood (2010) — as well as Howard’s Cinderella Man (2005). Other high-profile roles include Javert in Les Misérables (2012), Jor-El in Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel (2013), and Zeus in the Marvel Cinematic Universe movie, Thor: Love and Thunder (2022).
Crowe will return to the superhero genre, albeit not in the MCU, for Sony’s highly-anticipated Kraven the Hunter, which opens in theaters two months after The Excorism. He will appear in the movie as the title character’s father, Nikolai Kravinoff. Aaron Taylor-Johnson leads Kraven the Hunter, which also stars Ariana DeBose, Fred Hechinger, and Alessandra Nivola. Crowe is also attached to star alongside Rami Malek and Michael Shannon in the historical drama film Nuremberg.
The Exorcism is scheduled to hit theaters on June 7, 2024.
