Madame Web is new on Netflix this week as well as some other previous theatrical releases and Netflix originals.
Released by Sony Pictures Entertainment—which holds the rights to some Marvel properties including Spider-Man and Venom—Madame Web failed to ensnare big audiences during its nine-week theatrical run that kicked off on February 16.
According to box officer tracker The Numbers, Madame Web—which stars Dakota Johnson and Sydney Sweeney—earned $43.8 million in theaters domestically.
In addition to $56.4 million in international ticket sales, Madame Web ended up with a combined worldwide tally of $100.2 million against an $80 production budget before prints and advertising.
Madame Web was given a “rotten” 11% rating by Rotten Tomatoes critics based on 246 reviews, while 1,000 verified users of the site gave it a neutral 57% Audience Score.
Madame Web debuts on Netflix on Tuesday.
Here’s a look at some of the other films debuting on the streamer this week.
‘The Cloverhitch Killer’ (2018)
A 2018 indie release from IFC Films, The Cloverhitch Killer is billed as a mystery crime drama.
The Cloverhitch Killer stars Charlie Plummer as Tyler Burnside, a 16-year-old in a small Kentucky Town who stumbles upon an unnerving photograph that’s connected to the work of a serial killer who stalked his community 10 years before.
Dylan McDermott and Samantha Mathis play Tyler’s parents Don and Cindy.
The Cloverhitch Killer, which is unrated, premieres Wednesday on Netflix.
‘Dumb And Dumber To’ (2014)
It took 20 years after the release of the 1994 comedy hit Dumb and Dumber to get the not-so-duo of Lloyd (Jim Carrey) and Harry (Jeff Daniels) back on the big screen together for more moronic adventures in the sequel Dumb and Dumber To (yes, To is the way it’s spelled, since it is a Dumb and Dumber movie).
Like the original movie, the sequel chronicles the comedic misadventures of Lloyd and Harry, and is co-directed again by brothers Bobby and Peter Farrelly.
And while the sequel was every bit as “dumb,” so to speak, as the original Dumber movie, Dumb and Dumber To couldn’t replicate the financial success of its predecessor.
According to The Numbers, the original Dumb and Dumber earned $246.4 million at the worldwide box office, while Dumb and Dumber To took in considerably less with a global tally of $156.5 million.
Rated PG-13, Dumb and Dumber To debuts Thursday on Netflix.
‘Upgrade’ (2018)
Before he directed the hit reboot of Universal Studios’ classic The Invisible Man in 2020, filmmaker Leigh Whannell channeled his energies into the futuristic sci-fi revenge tale.
Logan Marshall-Green stars as Grey, a mechanic who becomes a quadriplegic in an attack that kills his wife Ahsa (Melanie Vallejo).
Once Grey gets a computer chip implant that restores all of his motor functions, his “upgrade” allows him to go on the hunt for the people responsible for Asha’s murder.
Rated R, Upgrade premieres on Netflix on Thursday.
‘Thelma The Unicorn’ (2024)
A Netflix original movie, Thelma the Unicorn is an animated movie adaptation of children’s book author Aaron Blabey’s 2017 bestseller of the same name.
Billed as an animated adventure comedy, Thelma the Unicorn—starring singer Brittany Howard as the title character—naturally has musical elements as the movie follows Thelma’s path to pop music greatness.
The voice cast includes Napoleon Dynamite luminary Jon Heder and former Saturday Night Live and The Last Man on Earth star Will Forte.
Rated PG, Thelma the Unicorn premieres Friday on Netflix.
Among the films already released on Netflix this May on the streaming service are Keanu Reeves’ The Matrix Resurrections and Matt Damon’s The Great Wall, as well as the Netflix original comedy Unfrosted, starring Jerry Seinfeld, Melissa McCarthy and Jim Gaffigan.
