Mukesh Bhatt was asked about the contribution of a writer to the film. He replied, “Filmmaking is a collective effort. It’s like a relay race. I pass on the baton to you. You take it forward and hand it to another person. Writing toh hamara editor bhi karta hai. We write a scene but when we see the shot, we realize ‘yeh scene toh beech mein se shuru hona chahiye. Uska rhythm barabar nahin ja raha hai’. Hence, even the editor’s contribution in the writing of the script is very significant.”
Mukesh Bhatt continued, “I’ll give you an example. We made a film, Arth (1982). Hrishikesh Mukherjee was a member of the jury of the National Awards. And he gave the award of Best Editing to Arth. When we learned about it, Mahesh Bhatt and I started laughing loudly. That’s because we hired an editor who was an amateur. I don’t want to name him. Mid-way, we realized that our editor was inexperienced. We decided that ab yeh aa gaya hai toh isko hataana nahin hai. Kaam karte hai iske saath. He was more of a ‘joiner’ than an editor.”
He narrated, “We asked Hrishi da, ‘Yeh award aapne kaise de diya?’ He replied, ‘I don’t know who the editor is. But the rhythm and heartbeat of the narrative is perfect. Isliye usko humne award diya’. That’s when we realized that kiska kaam kahan shuru hota hai aur kiska kaam kahan khatam hota hai, it all overlaps. There’s a lot of contribution from the cinematographer, sound designer, etc.; they also enhance or push the scene. Even the background score is important.”
He ended by saying, “Everyone’s contribution is important. You can’t say that someone contributed more than the other. Sabka contribution barabar ka hota hai. That is filmmaking.”
Savi releases in cinemas on May 31.
