Fans have received some rare potential insight into Studio Ghibli director Hayao Miyazaki’s upcoming film, with his son Goro Miyazaki revealing some details at a recent event.
Via Oricon, Goro Miyazaki attended the Ghibli Museum in Mitaka, Tokyo, for a preview of the second part of the special The Boy and the Heron exhibition. There, he revealed that his father had started the hobby of creating panorama boxes to pass the time during the film’s seven-year production but had only been basing them on his past movies. Goro told the media in attendance, “I’d tell him, ‘Make some for future projects. Only making them for your past stuff is boring.’ He’s making some now though.” Goro then added, “I don’t know if it’ll actually be for his next film, but it’s looking like an action-adventure-type movie, nostalgic and reminiscent of the old days.”
My Neighbor Totoro Sequel by Studio Ghibli Screens to Overseas Audiences for the First Time
Studio Ghibli receives a special award at the Cannes Film Festival, which will also screen four rare films — including the My Neighbor Totoro sequel.
Goro arrived freshly back from the Cannes Film Festival in France, where he had accepted the honorary Palme d’Or on behalf of Studio Ghibli. This marked the first time in history the award has been given to a group rather than an individual, and it follows numerous plaudits received for its latest feature movie The Boy and the Heron. During the festival, audiences received a thank-you clip from Toshio Suzuki and Miyazaki. Goro also shared additional comments from his father, such as his belief that “the golden age of anime has passed.”
Hayao Miyazaki’s Potential Nausicaa Sequel May Not Be in the Works After All
With Miyazaki potentially actively working on a new title, Goro’s admission may throw some cold water on fans hoping for a sequel to Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind. A follow-up to the 1984 classic has long been discussed, with renowned filmmakers like Takashi Yamazaki (Godzilla Minus One) and Hideaki Anno (Evangelion) signaling strong interest. Anno himself recently shared his intentions to “take a break from directing for a while” and entertained the prospect of an Evangelion sequel.
“Every Animator Is a Rival”: Studio Ghibli Reveals Why Hayao Miyazaki Keeps His Film Plans a Secret
While attending the Cannes Film Festival, Goro Miyazaki explains why his father never reveals any details about Ghibli’s films prior to release.
The Oscar Award-winning The Boy and the Heron recently received a 4K UHD home entertainment release date from GKIDS and Shout! Studios, marking another first-of-its-kind for Studio Ghibli. GKIDS describes the film: “After losing his mother during the war, young Mahito moves to his family’s estate in the countryside. There, a series of mysterious events lead him to a secluded and ancient tower, home to a mischievous gray heron. When Mahito’s new stepmother disappears, he follows the gray heron into the tower, and enters a fantastic world shared by the living and the dead. As he embarks on an epic journey with the heron as his guide, Mahito must uncover the secrets of this world, and the truth about himself.”
The Boy and the Heron
