The Deadpool & Wolverine novelty popcorn bucket has been revealed.
On Thursday, star Ryan Reynolds unveiled a suggestive ad (below) teasing the vaguely naughty popcorn bucket for Marvel’s upcoming superhero team-up. The bucket is a Wolverine helmet with a very wide open mouth. The move follows Marvel chief Kevin Fiege promising a “crude and rude” design for the bucket.
“Years from now they will look back at 2024 as when the War of the Popcorn Buckets began,” Reynolds wrote.
In the video, a gloved hand caresses the helmet, popcorn falls on its “face,” and then butter is dribbled down its side (we’re confident that no further explaining is required).
On the side of the bucket, “Designed by Deadpool” is scrawled in red.
Reynolds first teased the bucket minutes after the Deadpool & Wolverine teaser trailer dropped during the Super Bowl: “Wait til you see the Deadpool popcorn bucket,” he wrote.
While Feige promoted the popcorn bucket at CinemaCon in April.
“We’ve asked Deadpool to design a popcorn bucket for Deadpool & Wolverine,” Feige told the exhibitor audience. “And I don’t want to spoil it, but I will say, there are some movies that inadvertently make crude and rude popcorn buckets, and then there are popcorn buckets designed by Deadpool.”
No word yet which cinema chains will carry the bucket, or its cost, but previously novelty buckets have been priced from $25 to $50.
The move follows Dune: Part Two‘s AMC popcorn bucket, which went viral following a Saturday Night Live skit mocking it for looking like a rather painful sex toy.
Such novelty buckets have been a real revenue boost for theaters. Last summer, AMC chief Adam Aron predicted their 25,000 special edition Barbie Corvettes would sell out by the end of opening weekend at $34.99 a pop. He was right, which meant nearly $1 million in revenue.
Deadpool & Wolverine is Marvel’s first R-rated superhero movie and follows Disney acquiring the franchise as part of 20th Century Fox in 2019.
Deadpool & Wolverine will be released in theaters July 26.
