With Andy Serkis stepping behind the camera, expectations were high for Venom: Let There Be Carnage. The movie ended up being a big improvement over its predecessor, but a PG-13 rating neutered Cletus Kasady and held the movie back to a large degree.
A post-credits scene teasing Venom’s meeting with Spider-Man increased fan interest, only for Spider-Man: No Way Home‘s own stinger to send Eddie Brock back where he came from without ever meeting Peter Parker.
Venom: The Last Dance is up next and that movie will reportedly be Tom Hardy’s final appearance as Eddie. Kelly Marcel, who wrote Venom and Venom: Let There Be Carnage, now writes and directs…whether that’s a good or bad thing remains to be seen.
We’ll soon get a first look at the threequel, though, because the BBFC (British Board of Film Classification) has just classified a 2-minute, 27-second trailer which is rated 15 (the UK equivalent of an R-Rating).
According to trusted runtime and trailer leaker @Cryptic4KQual, the Venom: The Last Dance trailer is set to debut online next week and play in theaters in front of Bad Boys: Ride or Die. We’ve heard similar chatter and expect it to be online soon.
“These things [usually] come in threes,” Hardy previously said. “I think it’s really important, if you go into something, thinking that one, two and three are the same…the same story, the same film. So that you don’t surprise yourself by being caught out by suddenly having to do a third from nowhere.”
“There’s got to be some continuity into a third and fourth and fifth, and if somebody says ‘no’, that’s fine. Let it go, and you move on to something else,” he concluded.
It appears Hardy has decided to do just that, though there are still rumblings about Venom making the leap to the MCU…
Chiwetel Ejiofor (Doctor Strange) has landed a lead role in the threequel, though there’s been no official word on who he’s playing; the most popular theory online is that he’s been cast as The Jury’s General Orwell Taylor. Juno Temple (Ted Lasso) and Clark Backo (Letterkenny) have also boarded the threequel in undisclosed roles.
We also expect Michelle Williams to return as Anne Weying, a.k.a. She-Venom.
As well as playing Eddie Brock for what may be the final time, Tom Hardy also co-wrote Venom: The Last Dance’s story with director Kelly Marcel before she later penned the screenplay. Produced by Amy Pascal, Avi Arad, Matt Tolmach, and Hutch Parker, the movie is scheduled to arrive in theaters on October 25.
