A new month is just around the corner, and with that comes lots of new movies! Below, we’ve reviewed the full list of Netflix Originals and licensed titles, whether they be big-budget blockbusters, indie darlings, or compelling docs, to bring you eight must-watch picks for the month.

As always, with our what-to-watch lists, we’ll split this post into two halves. We’ll first pick out three Netflix Original movies and docs coming to the service globally (we usually do four, but honestly, slim pickings) and then move on to licensed titles that will drop specifically in the US but may also drop elsewhere too.

For the full list of what’s coming up on Netflix throughout July 2024, keep it locked here on What’s on Netflix.

Watch for our What to Watch section in the coming days. In it, we’ll also review our most anticipated upcoming series.

3 Most Anticipated Upcoming Netflix Original Movies

Note: These titles are scheduled to arrive on Netflix globally.

Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F (2024)

Coming to Netflix: July 3rd

Was there going to be any other choice for the main movie Netflix Original pick for July? Eddie Murphy is back in one of his most iconic roles nearly 30 years after the release of the third movie and 40 since the first!

The movie features a stacked all-star cast, including both familiar and plenty of new faces. The vast cast includes Taylour Paige, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, John Ashton, Kevin Bacon, Paul Reiser, and many, many more.

Picking up after that third entry, Foley is back on the beat in Beverly Hills with his daughter’s life in danger while at the center of a conspiracy

The Imaginary (2024)

Coming to Netflix: July 5th

Boy, Netflix has some fantastic animation this year. The Imaginary, directed by Yoshiyuki Momose (best known for working on Spirited Away, Modest Heroes, and NiNoKuni), kicks off a new long-term relationship with Studio Ponoc, with multiple feature films coming in the years to come.

The magical new fantasy film has all the hallmarks of a Studio Ghibli title: It’s beautifully animated and has a beautiful message at its core. The story revolves around a young boy named Rudger who has gone through a traumatic loss and copes by befriending an invisible entity.

Skywalkers: A Love Story

Coming to Netflix: July 19th

We round out our Netflix Original movie picks with Skywalkers: A Love Story, one of several documentaries absolutely worth your time throughout July.

We’ve picked Skywalkers, though, as it has the most incredible imagery and one we suspect will have your heart in your mouth throughout the entire runtime.

The documentary focuses on Angela Nikolau and Vanya Beerkus, two daredevils (or rooftoppers as they’re known) who are known for taking pictures in hard-to-reach places.

5 Best Licensed Movies Coming in July 2024

Note: These titles are coming to Netflix in the US and their availability in other regions may vary.

The Long Game (2023)

Coming to Netflix: July 12th

We tee off with our licensed picks with The Long Game, one of several SVOD debuts that Netflix will receive throughout July 2024. An SVOD debut means that this is the first time the title has been available as part of a streaming subscription, although it has been available on VOD before.

Starring Jay Hernandez and Dennis Quaid, the biopic tells the story of the Mexican-American youth group known as the San Felipe Mustangs, who defied the odds to compete and win a state golf championship.

Going Clear: Scientology and The Prison of Belief (2015)

Coming to Netflix: July 5th

Netflix has had many cult documentaries, but none quite reached the level of infamy worldwide that Scientology has. That’s why we’re pleased to report that the HBO documentary Going Clear, which serves as the definitive documentary on the religion, is set to land on Netflix.

The documentary, put together by Alex Gibney (Dirty Money) through compelling testimony from former church members, looks back at the history of religion from its creation to the modern day. It also examines Scientologists’ beliefs and how they became a force to be reckoned with around the globe.

Bone Tomahawk (2015)

Coming to Netflix: July 15th

Westerns are making a comeback, with Yellowstone continuing to do big numbers for Paramount. We’ve even seen Kevin Costner attempt to bring the genre back to theatrical, albeit with significantly less success

If you fancy a new Western movie on Netflix, Bone Tomahawk, starring Kurt Russell, will make its Netflix debut slap bam in the middle of the month.

The movie received sterling reviews at the time of release from critics and audiences alike. Russell plays a sheriff who, along with his deputy, embarks on a mission to rescue three people from dangerous cave dwellers.

Patrick Wilson, Matthew Fox, Richard Jenkins, Lili Simmons, and Evan Jonigkeit round out the cast.

Land of Bad (2024)

Coming to Netflix: July 18th

Another of the SVOD debuts that Netflix will get in July will be Land of Bad, which we first reported was coming to Netflix over a week ago

Directed by William Eubank, the action thriller stars Liam Hemsworth and Russell Crowe. The plot revolves around a US special forces unit that is ambushed during a retrieval mission. The unit must now survive an intense 48 hours stranded with only the help of a drone operator.

The movie debuted theatrically a little earlier this year and picked up some good solid reviews, with Mark Jonson for Epoch Times saying, “Land of Bad is a fine war movie—maybe not on the level of, say, Platoon, but easily in the same ballpark as 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi.”

The Inspection (2022)

Coming to Netflix: July 18th

Finally, we conclude our picks with an A24 movie that adds to the ten or so currently available on Netflix from the popular indie distributor, and this one is by far the most underrated addition.

Written and directed by Elegance Bratton, the poignant drama follows a young man who has been rejected by his mother and seeks family and refuge in the military.

The plot bears a similar premise to Netflix’s upcoming series called The Corps, which is currently in production at the time of publishing.
