Shah Rukh Khan has revealed what his next movie will be. The Indian actor and producer is an international superstar who is best known for his works in Bollywood cinema. Major Shah Rukh Khan movies include 1995’s Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, 2002’s Devdas, and 2007’s Om Shanti Om. After a commercial slump in the mid-2010s and a years-long acting hiatus, the star – who is also known by the acronym SRK – returned to the big screen in a major way by starring in a pair of hit action movies, Pathaan and Jawan, both of which were released in 2023.

Variety recently sat down for an interview with Shah Rukh Khan at the Locarno Film Festival. During their conversation, he revealed what his next project will be after his 2023 roles, a roster which also includes starring in the dramedy Dunki. The movie, which is titled King, is being directed by Kahaani‘s Sujoy Ghosh and produced by Pathaan director Siddharth Anand. Khan described it as an “action drama,” saying “I really wanted to do a film like this for seven, eight years.” Read SRK’s full quote below:

It’s a film called King, which is directed by Sujoy Ghosh and creatively produced by Siddharth Anand, who made Pathaan. It is an action drama, it’s a Hindi film. It’ll be interesting. I’ve been wanting to do a film like that for some time, and I really wanted to do a film like this for seven, eight years. We just felt Sujoy would be the right choice, because we wanted it to be very emotionally correct. We are all coming together to make a cool, massy, action, emotional film.

Can King Compete With Shah Rukh Khan’s Banner Year In 2023?

Jawan And Pathaan Were Record-Breaking Hits

It remains to be seen if King can compete with the Shah Rukh Khan movies that hit theaters in 2023. In addition to kicking off his comeback, both were smash hits that made waves for Indian cinema as a whole, not just for the star or for Bollywood cinema. Both titles are now in the Top 10 highest-grossing Indian movies of all time, with Pathaan landing at No. 7 and Jawan at No. 5. Below, see the full Top 10 chart at the time of writing (a crore is ten million rupees, which is roughly $119,100 USD at current exchange rates).

However, the stage is already set for the upcoming Shah Rukh Khan action movie to be a box office hit. In addition to both of the star’s 2023 action movie’s breaking records, recent years have seen Indian cinema in general finding a much wider audience globally, with commercial and critical successes largely coming from the action genre including the Oscar-winning hit RRR, the dystopian sci-fi epic Kalki 2898 AD, and the Sandeep Reddy Vanga-helmed action drama Animal. Other recent movies have also made waves without entering the box office Top 10, including the violent revenge movie Kill.

Shah Rukh Khan has also found solid partners who are setting him up for success. Anand has already shepherded the star to recent screen success, while Ghosh’s work on Kahaani has proven his ability to turn even a project with a relatively small price tag into a hit movie, as that 2012 title grossed ₹104 crore against a budget of just ₹8 crore. With those three creatives working together, King could match or even succeed Pathaan and Jawan if they play their cards right.
