Nic Cage, Matthew Modine, Amanda Plummer in Oldenburg Festival Trailer

The resistance has begun. In Oldenburg.

The official trailer for the 2024 Oldenburg Film Festival, dropped on Wednesday (see below). It imagines a future world in which Germany’s leading indie film festival is the center of a human uprising against a world ruled by superintelligent A.I. that has resulted in a “deconstruction of empathy and emotion” and a “dehumanization of culture by algorithms.”

The trailer, which you can check out below, is done in the style of La Jetée, Chris Marker’s groundbreaking 1962 French science fiction featurette, which used mainly still photos to tell a time travel story set in a post-nuclear war world.

Pulp Fiction star, and 2016 Oldenburg Film Festival lifetime award winner, Amanda Plummer provides the voice-over commentary for the film, which clocks in at nearly 5 minutes. “Definitely the longest festival trailer of all times,” jokes Oldenburg co-founder and director Torsten Neumann.

Alongside the throw-back sci-fi imagery, the film features stills of celebrity visitors and party highlights from the past 30 years of Oldenburg, from Matthew Modine and the late Seymour Cassel — an Oldenburg regular, the festival’s acting award is named in his honor — to Nicolas Cage, who attended the fest in 2016, receiving both a lifetime achievement honor and a star on the German city’s walk of fame.

Oldenburg’s tongue-in-cheek cineliterate trailers are a festival tradition. Previous editions featured spoofs of The Matrix, Fast & Furious and Apocalypse Now.

The 31st Oldenburg Film Festival runs Sept. 11-15.
