'I'm really proud': A. R. Rahman on bagging 7th National Film Award

The 70th National Film Awards ceremony took place at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi, on October 8, with the prestigious honours being presented by President Droupadi Murmu. This year’s awards celebrated the best films and performances of 2022, and one of the standout winners was legendary music composer A.R. Rahman. Rahman won in the Best Music (Background Score) category for Ponniyin Selvan I, marking his second win in this category and his seventh National Award overall.

Speaking on the red carpet, A. R. Rahman reflected on his journey, saying, “This one seems like coming a full circle. I received my first award for Roja, which was with them. This award is also for Mani Ratnam‘s film. I feel very proud. He’s also here.” The iconic duo of A.R. Rahman and Mani Ratnam has collaborated on several memorable films, including Bombay, Dil Se.., Alaipayuthey, and Guru. Fans are eagerly awaiting their next project, Thug Life, which stars Kamal Haasan.

Over the years, Rahman has composed numerous chart-topping tracks including “Roja” and “Chhaiyya Chhaiyya”, which became instant classics. The Oscar-winning “Jai Ho” brought him global fame, while songs like “Nadaan Parindey”, “Tere Bina”, and “Dil Se Re” showcase his versatility. Rahman’s soulful compositions, including “Minsara Poove” and “Ishq Nachaye”, continue to captivate listeners, cementing his legacy as the maestro of modern Indian music.

Meanwhile, other major winners at the 70th National Film Awards included Rishab Shetty, who took home the Best Actor award for his role in Kantara, and Nithya Menen and Manasi Parekh, who shared the Best Actress award for their performances in Tiruchitrabalam and Kutch Express, respectively. Neena Gupta won Best Supporting Actress for Uunchai, which also earned Sooraj Barjatya the Best Director award. Pawan Malhotra secured the Best Supporting Actor honor for Fouji.

The prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award, India’s highest cinematic recognition, was awarded to veteran actor Mithun Chakraborty, celebrating his immense contribution to Indian cinema.
