Kabir Bedi on differences between Bollywood, Hollywood and South Indian cinemas: ‘Our process of filmmaking is slightly unprofessional’

After working in Indian theatre, Kabir Bedi went on to work in Hindi movies. He continues to be one of the first international actors from India to work in Hindi films, South Indian cinema, and Hollywood films, and became a star in Europe. As a theatrical actor, Bedi has done ‘Othello’ by William Shakespeare, played a historical Indian king in ‘Tughlaq’, and starred in ‘The Vultures’ as a self-destructive alcoholic.
The veteran star recently talked about the differences between Hindi and South Indian movies and the filming processes in Hollywood and Bollywood.
During a conversation with Bollywood Bubble, Kabir discussed the difference between the casting process in Bollywood and Hollywood. He shared that there are agents; without them, nothing is possible. Following this, there is the process of auditioning. Agents recommend individuals, and filmmakers conduct auditions for all candidates.
Additionally, he discussed the differences he had observed between Bollywood and the various film industries he worked in, including Hollywood, Telugu, Tamil, and others. Bedi said that nowadays whatever happens in the West, like America or Europe, we are equally professional. The technology available is robust, and there is a sense of parity with global standards. While he said that we have not yet attained the level of Pixar Animation Studios, when it comes to set design, acting, and choreography, we aren’t behind anyone. Our cinema is as modern as any other in the industry.
The ‘Khoon Bhari Maang’ actor also mentioned that filmmaking in India can be a bit unprofessional. He explained that when a writer finishes a script, it usually goes to the producer and then the director, with only a few people giving feedback. In Hollywood, many more executives read and review the script before it’s finalized. He pointed out that older filmmakers took big risks for their movies, while today’s executives are more concerned about their jobs and money. He stressed that making films is a creative process and there’s no sure way to make a hit.
On the work front, Kabir Bedi was last seen in the Telugu film ‘Shaakuntalam’ in 2023. It also starred Samantha Ruth Prabhu, Dev Mohan, Sachin Khedekar, Mohan Babu, Aditi Balan and Ananya Nagalla.
