Amanda Seyfried dreams of singing the title song in a ‘Mamma Mia’ film

Amanda Seyfried has a dream — a song to sing.

The actress wants to get to deliver the title song in a potential third Mamma Mia! film.

“My dream in general is to sing ‘Mamma Mia,’ because I have not,” Seyfried said on SiriusXM’s The Spotlight with Jessica Shaw. “It was Meryl’s song, and it was Lily’s song. I think Sophie needs a shot because that is my favorite song. It’s my daughter’s favorite song, too. It’s always been my favorite song.”

Seyfried was referring to the fact that in the first film, Meryl Streep’s character, Donna, is the one to sing the title song, when she is taken off guard by the arrival of all three of her former suitors (and Sophie’s potential dads). Then, in the 2018 sequel Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, Lily James sang the track alongside Jessica Keenan Wynn and Alexa Davies, while performing as the younger versions of Donna, Tanya, and Rosie.

But Seyfried hopes the song can be passed along to her character, Sophie, who is the daughter of Streep’s Donna. “It’s like the energy behind it,” she added. “It’s a bop.”

Seyfried’s remarks came in response to Shaw’s question about which track would be her dream to duet with Sabrina Carpenter on. Last week, Seyfried said that she’d love to have the pop star play her daughter in a third film, after fans suggested the casting. Carpenter recently covered the title track on the opening night of her Short N’ Sweet tour.

“Technically she could,” Seyfried said of whether Carpenter would be even the right age to play her daughter. “You know what? Old age makeup for me. That’s what it will be. I don’t mind. I’m an actor. I’ll do it. If Sabrina Carpenter wants to play my daughter, I’ll make it happen. It’s fine…. I’m a big fan.”

Maybe Seyfried’s dream will come true since it seems Carpenter is clearly a fan of the song, too.

Though a third film has yet to be greenlit, rumors about it have swirled for years. Earlier this year, Christine Baranski, who played Tanya in both previous films, said that she’d had dinner with producer Judy Craymer who had given her “the narrative plotline of how it’s going to happen.”

“That’s all I can say!” Baranski added. “But, it’s not like, ‘Oh, I wish it could happen!’ Judy Craymer makes things happen. She made number two happen, and it was a phenomenal hit. I wouldn’t put it past Judy Craymer to get everybody back together.”

Everybody includes not only Baranski and Seyfried, but also Streep — who said she’d happily return as a reincarnated version of Donna (her death was revealed in Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again), as well as Julie Walters, Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth. Stellan SkarsgårdDominic CooperAndy Garcia, and Cher.

Perhaps Donna and the Dynamos could use a Carpenter in their mix.

While the first film followed Sophie and her journey to find her father before her wedding day, the second film centered on the reopening of Donna’s hotel, as well as the backstory of Donna’s youth and her whirlwind love stories with Sophie’s three possible dads. The original 2008 film was based upon the Broadway musical of the same name, which used the music of ABBA to tell its story of wedding hijinks and daddy drama.
