Can nostalgia sustain Box Office buzz?

Who wouldn’t like to re-visit a favourite movie? There are times when one wants to curl up in the comfort of a much loved movie, regardless of how many times one has seen it before. Take for instance, a movie like ‘Sholay’ or ‘Zanzeer’ or ‘The Godfather’.

The recent spate of Bollywood re-releases hitting the big screens, and doing well at the Box Office has created a buzz. While re-releasing an old hit movie is not a new phenomenon, what is intriguing this time is that even movies that had not done very good business when they were first launched, have done well at the Box Office – for instance, ‘Laila Majnu’ (the Tripti Dimrii one and not the one starring Rishi Kapoor and Ranjeeta) and horror-fantasy film ‘Tumbbad’.

Some re-releases had been huge hits when they were first released, such as ‘Rehna Hai Tere Dil Mein’ and ‘Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge’, which are now winning over a new generation of movie goers.

What’s even more surprising is that these movies are frequently shown on television as well. Yet, movie fans are preferring to watch them in the theatre. This resurgence of classic Bollywood films reflects the enduring allure of great storytelling and the strong emotional connection that viewers have with these iconic narratives.

A Vital Boost to the Box Office

According to Amit Sharma, Managing Director, Miraj Entertainment, re-releases have played a crucial role in keeping the Box Office alive during periods where fresh content was lacking, particularly between April and September. He explained, “It’s the younger audience driving this success. Films like ‘Tumbbad’, ‘Laila Majnu’, and ‘Gangs of Wasseypur’ have performed extraordinarily well in their re-releases because these films didn’t get the recognition they deserved when they first came out. Now, the younger generation is eager to see these films on the big screen, which is why they are doing so well.”

Sharma also pointed out that the decision to re-release certain films was influenced by gaps in the release calendar, with few new movies competing at the box office. This provided an opportunity for older films to make a comeback and capture the audience’s attention once more.

However, he believed this trend might soon peak. With major films like ‘Singham Again’, ‘Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3’, and ‘Ramayana’ set for release, the space for re-releases will shrink, making it more challenging for exhibitors to accommodate them.

The Emotional Connection with Classic Films

Ashish Kanakia, CEO, MovieMax Cinemas, emphasized that the re-release of films is not just about filling gaps in programming, but also about responding to audience demand. “These films allow people to relive the magic of their favourite movies on the big screen,” Kanakia explained. While re-releases may not generate blockbuster profits, they consistently maintain around 30% occupancy, which is still significant. More importantly, they offer audiences a blend of nostalgia and fresh experiences, keeping them engaged with theatres.

Nostalgia Meets Quality Storytelling

Mohan Gopinath, Head of Bollywood Business at Shemaroo Entertainment Limited, highlighted how nostalgia plays a pivotal role in the success of these re-releases. He noted that everything – from the star cast to the songs, and even the time period in which audiences first experienced these films – has stayed in people’s minds. “These films tap into nostalgia, reminding audiences of their past experiences. They also attract more discerning viewers who appreciate quality storytelling, regardless of the film’s initial box office performance.”

He further explained that social media has played a crucial role in reviving interest in these classic films, creating discussions that attract both long time fans and new viewers who may have missed these movies during their original runs.

Factors Behind Re-release Selections

When it comes to selecting films for re-release, Gopinath explained that hits and blockbusters are often chosen because they easily resonate with audiences who want to relive iconic moments. However, some films that didn’t perform well initially – due to factors like high production costs, poor marketing, or unfavourable release timing – are now being recognized for their quality. These films find a new audience during their re-releases, and Gopinath believed that Hindi cinema’s revival over the past two years, with hits like ‘Stree 2’, has created a sense of comfort for audiences revisiting these classics.

The Future of Re-releases: A Short-Lived Trend or Long-Term Gameplan?

While the re-release trend may last for another two years, driven by audience demand for meaningful storytelling, according to Gopinath, he suggested that the appreciation for timeless narratives will continue well beyond that. The re-release of films provides an opportunity to introduce new generations to gems from Bollywood’s rich cinematic history, ensuring that these stories endure for years to come.
