Grand Theft Hamlet has landed a UK release date.

It’s been confirmed that the upcoming film, which is inspired by the Grand Theft Auto video game series, will arrive in UK and Ireland cinemas on December 6.

The documentary follows theatre actors Sam Crane and Mark Oosterveen, who spend their days during lockdown playing Grand Theft Auto.

As the pandemic drags on, theatres remain closed, and the pair become increasingly bored, Sam and Mark suddenly have an idea to stage a full production of Hamlet within the game.

The film, which was directed by Crane alongside Pinny Grylls, premiered at the South by Southwest (SXSW) festival earlier this year, garnering critical acclaim and landing a perfect 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes.

This score has since dipped slightly, sitting at a still-impressive 95% from 20 reviews.

Deadline described Grand Theft Hamlet as “one of the best films yet to come out of the pandemic,” while Variety called it “endearing and provocative.”

Grand Theft Hamlet underscores how much gaming, like acting on a stage or in films, is performative, cathartic, playful in every sense,” wrote The Hollywood Reporter, while IndieWire said the film “restores a palpable sense of danger to one of the stalest but still most exciting English-language plays ever written.”

Elsewhere in the GTA universe, Grand Theft Auto VI is set to arrive in late 2025.

The latest instalment of the video game series follows Lucia and Jason as they go on a crime spree in Vice City, with the first trailer for the game teasing some of their exploits, including naked gardening, a crocodile attacking a convenience store and a gas station streaker.

Grand Theft Hamlet drives into cinemas on December 6.
