The pair were together for five years, calling it quits and filing for divorce in 1964.

Elizabeth had cheated on Fisher with Richard Burton, who went on to be her next husband.

Debbie, who had chose not to speak publicly about the affair, later claimed she knew it wasn’t going to work out between them.

“He’s not a strong enough personality for Elizabeth, who preferred her men to be – well, Richard Burton,” she told NPR in 2013.

“I warned Eddie that she’d kick him out in a year and a half. And that’s exactly what happened, which gave me at least a little comfort.”

And while Eddie’s love story may have ended there, Debbie and Elizabeth still had more in store.

Less than a decade after everything went down, the duo found themselves on the same cruise ship.

Despite originally wanting to abandon ship, Debbie decided to extend an olive branch, writing a note to Taylor suggesting they move on.

“She sent a note back to mine saying that we should have dinner and get this over with and have a good time. And we had a wonderful evening with a lot of laughs,” Debbie recalled.

The two went on to remain friends up until Elizabeth’s death in 2011, even starring in the film These Old Broads together in 2001.

According to Debbie, she was never interested in holding a grudge.

She shared that she was happy to forgive, adding, “and then to the end of her life, we were together.”
