In a staggering achievement, My Hero Academia: You’re Next has shattered previous box office records earned by the franchise. Since its release in Japan in August, the new movie has grossed over 35 billion yen (approximately US$250 million), drawing in 2.46 million viewers, per reports at the time of writing.

Financial success might have been expected, but the film’s exponential box office return may still surprise some, as You’re Next achieved a 118% increase in profit compared to its previous theatrical release, My Hero Academia: World Heroes’ Mission (2021). The new movie was released in Japan just prior to the conclusive entry to My Hero Academia‘s anime series, opening in 488 theaters domestically, including 51 IMAX screens. Per Japanese news site Oricon, its opening night alone drew over 250,000 attendees and grossed nearly four billion yen.

You’re Next continues the adventures of main character, Izuku “Deku” Midoriya and his fight to save the world from those who seek to tear it apart. Although the series is based on the manga written by Kohei Horikoshi, this newest installment serves as an original story supervised by Horikoshi, set in the same timeline as the anime’s seventh season. With rising tensions between heroes and villains, the film leads to a climactic showdown that serves as the perfect counterpart to the action-packed Season 7.

The film’s distributor, Toho, expressed confidence in its continued success, targeting a final box office tally exceeding 40 billion yen, stating, “My Hero Academia: You’re Next will be the highest-grossing film in the series! Thank you for all your support! Let’s continue to go Plus Ultra in theaters!” Alongside its record-breaking box office haul, My Hero Academia: You’re Next has struck a chord with audiences and critics alike, with many praising its jaw-dropping animation and high-stakes fights. Despite the manga and soon, its anime series, coming to an end, You’re Next proves that My Hero Academia still has the potential to soar higher than ever.
