Asin Thottumkal is celebrating her 39th birthday today, on October 26. While the actress has stepped away from the limelight, her contributions to both South Indian and Bollywood cinema remain unforgettable. Over the years, Asin impressed audiences with her powerful performances in Bollywood films like Ghajini, Ready, Housefull 2 and Bol Bachchan.

Her peak in Bollywood between 2010 and 2014 firmly established her as one of the industry’s leading ladies. After her marriage in 2016 to businessman Rahul Sharma, co-founder of Micromax, Asin chose to step back from her acting career and focus on family life.

Her last on-screen appearance was in All Is Well (2015), where she shared the screen with Abhishek Bachchan, Rishi Kapoor and Supriya Pathak. Today, Asin and Rahul Sharma are happily married with a daughter, born in 2017.

Journey From South Indian Cinema to Bollywood

Born in October 1985, Asin entered the world of acting at a young age. With a strong foundation as a Bharatanatyam dancer, Asin made her acting debut in the Malayalam film Narendran Makan Jayakanthan Vaka (2001) at just 15 years old.

Her breakthrough came with the Telugu hit Amma Nanna O Tamila Ammayi (2003), where she delivered a memorable performance that earned her the Filmfare Best Telugu Actress Award.

Her success continued in Tamil cinema with the blockbuster M. Kumaran Son of Mahalakshmi (2004), followed by Ghajini (2005), which cemented her position as a leading actress.

Her performance in Ghajini won her the Filmfare Best Tamil Actress Award and put her on the map as one of the most sought-after actresses in the industry.

From 2005 onwards, Asin starred in a string of successful Tamil films, including Sivakasi (2005), Varalaru (2006), Pokkiri (2007), Vel (2008) and Dasavathaaram (2008), where she shone as the leading lady.

Her versatility and ability to slip into various roles endeared her to audiences, and her contribution to Tamil cinema was recognised in 2013 when she received the Pride of South Indian Cinema award at SIIMA.

In 2008, Asin made her Bollywood debut with the Hindi version of Ghajini, starring alongside Aamir Khan. The film became the first in Bollywood to gross over Rs. 1 billion at the domestic box office and a staggering Rs 1.9 billion globally. Her portrayal of Kalpana won her accolades, including the Filmfare Best Female Debut Award, marking the beginning of a successful Bollywood career.

2011 was another pivotal year for Asin in Bollywood.

She starred opposite Salman Khan in the romantic comedy Ready, which became one of the year’s top box office hits, earning Rs 1.84 billion worldwide.

The following year, she joined the ensemble cast of Housefull 2, which surpassed Rs 1 billion at the box office and starred in the commercially successful films Bol Bachchan and Khiladi 786.

Her final film, All Is Well (2015), was a departure from her usual roles, but nonetheless showed her continued versatility. After this, Asin chose to retire from acting and focus on her personal life.

Ghajini (2005)

Asin’s role as Kalpana Shetty, a struggling model who falls in love with a businessman, in A.R. Murugadoss’s action thriller Ghajini was pivotal in her career. Her performance alongside Suriya received widespread acclaim, and the Tamil film’s success catapulted her into the limelight in Tamil cinema.

Ghajini (2008)

Asin reprised her role as Kalpana in the Hindi remake of Ghajini, this time starring opposite Aamir Khan. The film, a major box office success, marked Asin’s entry into Bollywood and became one of the highest-grossing Hindi films of all time. Her performance in this emotionally charged role earned her praise and cemented her Bollywood presence.

Amma Nanna O Tamila Ammayi (2003)

In this Telugu sports drama, Asin played Mugambigambal, a Tamil girl who falls in love with a passionate kickboxer. Her portrayal of the character, combined with her natural charm, won her the Filmfare Best Telugu Actress Award and further established her in the South Indian film industry.

Dasavathaaram (2008)

In this ambitious sci-fi action film, Asin co-starred with Kamal Haasan, who played ten distinct roles. Her performance was lauded and she won the Best Actress award at the International Tamil Film Awards for her role in this high-concept film that was both a commercial and critical success.

Kaavalan (2011)

In Kaavalan, Asin played Meera, a woman who falls in love with her bodyguard, portrayed by Vijay. The film was a box office hit, grossing over Rs 100 crore worldwide. It was her last Tamil film before stepping away from the industry to focus on her Bollywood career.

Ready (2011)

Asin teamed up with Salman Khan once again for the romantic comedy Ready, where she portrayed Sanjana Singh, a woman caught between two feuding uncles. The film was a massive commercial success in India and worldwide globally. Asin’s performance was well-received, and her on-screen chemistry with Salman Khan contributed to the film’s popularity.
