It’s another day, another #1 finish for Back in Action on Netflix’s Top 10 charts for movies. This romance/action flick has secured its 11th consecutive day atop the list, holding off other movies that have commanded the charts for weeks, like Ad Vitam and Despicable Me 2, and newcomers that weren’t quite able to squeeze past, like You Gotta Believe and Scream VI. And while it may seem expected for a big-budget movie starring Cameron Diaz and Jamie Foxx to control the Top 10 list for days on end, this particular run has begun to approach unprecedented territory.
Before we get to the stats, a quick review of the movie’s plot: For years, Emily and Matt (Diaz and Foxx) were CIA spies, but they decided to trade in their covert missions for a quieter life. Years later, equipped with new identities, they live quietly in Atlanta with their children—that is until a nightclub altercation exposes their cover, drawing attention from their former boss and a dangerous mercenary group. Forced back into action, the family flees to England, seeking an old ally to recover a powerful device hidden years earlier known as the ICS Key. Amid sabotage and kidnappings, Matt and Emily must protect their children, outwit foes and prevent catastrophic misuse of the device, all while reconciling with Emily’s complex family ties.
This movie directed by Seth Gordon is notable for the return of Cameron Diaz, who had been away from the big screen (or, in this case, the small screen) for years. And what better partner would make for her big cinematic return than Jamie Foxx, who had already collaborated with Diaz on two previous films, Any Given Sunday and Annie. The movie was destined to register lots of hype—but I’m not sure anybody expected numbers like this.
Back In Action’s Amazing Top 10 Run
As I stated earlier, today marks the 11th consecutive day in the #1 spot for Back in Action. While that might not seem like a great number, especially given Carry-On’s record-breaking 21-day run in the top spot just last month, this sort of streak is not common at all. And all we have to do is look at the past two years to see how special this run truly is.
Last year, no movie besides Carry-On was able to register even an 11-day streak last year. Three movies, The Union, Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F and Hit Man, were able to achieve 10-day streaks; four movies, Atlas, Anyone But You, The Little Things and Irish Wish managed nine-day streaks; and four other movies, Our Little Secret, Bad Boys: Ride or Die, The Garfield Movie and Rebel Ridge, achieved eight-day streaks. And, as you can see, only seven of those movies were produced by Netflix. Which means Netflix had a bit of a dry spell in 2024.
Even 2023 wasn’t great for Netflix, with only Leave the World Behind, Extraction 2 and You People managing to reach the 11-day threshold. Both Leave the World Behind and Extraction 2 nabbed 13-day streaks, while You People stalled out at 11 days. Beyond those movies, however, there isn’t much to note in 2023.
Which spells great things for Netflix in 2025. Already to start the new year, Back in Action has achieved an 11-day streak in the #1 position, making it just the 14th film to ever do so. Here’s a list of every movie that’s managed that long of a streak since Netflix established the Top 10 charts back in February 2020:
- Carry-On – 21 days
- Don’t Look Up – 18 days
- Spenser Confidential – 18 days
- The Adam Project – 15 days
- Glass Onion: A Knives Out Story – 14 days
- The Unforgivable – 14 days
- The Mitchells vs. The Machines – 14 days
- Hubie Halloween – 14 days
- Leave the World Behind – 13 days
- Extraction 2 – 13 days
- Project Power – 13 days
- Red Notice – 12 days
- You People – 11 days
- Back in Action – 11 days
As you can see, almost all the movies that sit atop that list, like Don’t Look Up, Spenser Confidential, Hubie Halloween and The Unforgivable, were dominant in 2020 and 2021, while a few others, like The Adam Project and Glass Onion: A Knives Out Story, made their premieres in 2022. Truly, Carry-On and Back in Action have been the only recent releases to had garnered enough hype and star power to monopolize the Top 10 charts for days on end.
So now we must ask the question: how long will this go on? Looking through the end of January, only one new movie, the 2024 release Here starring Tom Hanks and Robin Wright, has a realistic shot of eclipsing Back in Action. And while one of the dozens of new movies hitting Netflix in February could move past Diaz and Foxx’s movie, the only Netflix production that has a true fighting chance is the Amy Schumer comedy Kinda Pregnant on Feb. 5, 2025. So if Back in Action was able to hold off competitors until then, it would achieve a 19-day streak—a feat only one other movie, Carry-On, would have accomplished mere weeks earlier.
That’s saying something, considering the kinds of movies Back in Action would be passing. You’ve got plenty star-studded affairs, like The Adam Project, Leave the World Behind and Glass Onion: A Knives Out Story, that would fall to the wayside. And then you’ve got the major behemoths, like the 2021 release Red Notice, which currently reigns above all other Netflix movies with 230.9 million views, and Don’t Look Up (also a 2021 release), which sits in the #2 position with 171.4 million views. Could Back in Action truly be on track to pass those movies?
The numbers definitively tell us: yes, it’s entirely possible. In its first two days alone, Back in Action managed to accrue 46.8 million views. And now with nine more days of views to tally—and soon, especially if the movie plans to stay atop the Top 10 for weeks on end, even more—it’s hard to know how successful this movie could become. The Mother currently sits in the 10th-place position with 136.4 million views, so it seems Back in Action could very well become one of Netflix’s ten most popular movies to date.
