best movies and shows to watch

January 27, 20257 Mins Read

Valentine’s Day is upon us, but Netflix is surprisingly short on new romantic content. (There is plenty of older stuff, though.) But there is much to love among the streamer’s newest slate of content. There’s the true story of a harrowing military operation, the ‘true-ish’ story of a wellness scammer, a comedy about a fake basketball team and a documentary about real ones, the final episodes of a beloved cult favourite series – oh, and Robert DeNiro’s TV debut.

And if you’re just really in the mood for something in the romcom vein, there’s a movie about Amy Schumer meeting the love of her life – while wearing a baby bump and pretending to be pregnant. Ah, sweet romance.

Kinda Pregnant

Adam Sandler’s Happy Madison Productions produced this romcom starring Amy Schumer as a single woman pretending to be pregnant, who must somehow keep up the ruse when she meets a guy she might want to have non-pretend kids with. Whatever you think of that premise, or Schumer, the cast also includes Will Forte, Jillian Bell and Damon Wayans Jr, who are funny in pretty much everything. And it’s rated R, which is encouraging.

Another entry to the growing canon of shows inspired by real-life scam artists, this miniseries is based on Belle Gibson, an Australian wellness influencer who bilked followers in the early days of Instagram by claiming to have cured herself of brain cancer despite never having been diagnosed. Don’t worry much about the facts, though: it’s billed as a “true-ish” story, and the trailer makes it look almost like Mean Girls with bloggers.

Surviving Black Hawk Down

Ridley Scott’s Black Hawk Down dramatised the events of October 1993, when a UN helicopter was shot down in war-torn Mogadishu, leading to a dramatic rescue mission. In this three-part documentary, also produced by Ridley Scott and partners, US and Somali soldiers recount the incident. Aided by frontline video and reenactments, it should prove just as riveting as the film.

Cobra Kai season 6, part 3

It’s the end of the Miyagi-verse as we know it – at least until Karate Kid: Legends hits cinemas in four months. Netflix has been doling out the final season of the nostalgic martial-arts series in five-episode chunks, and now comes the final batch, as former enemies Daniel LaRusso and Johnny Lawrence get one last shot at lifting their dojo to victory in the prestigious Sekai Tekai tournament.

Basketball is still dominated by America, but the gap is closing, as demonstrated at the most recent Olympics. This docuseries follows the star-studded US men’s team to the 2024 games in Paris, but, perhaps more interestingly, also goes into the locker room with the major international players – including Serbia’s Nikola Jokic and French phenom Victor Wembanyama – looking to upset their Yankee coworkers. Spoiler: it doesn’t happen.

Zero Day

A former US president is tasked with investigating a cyberattack that has left more than 3,000 Americans dead. Sounds a bit generic, but what if we told you the ex-POTUS is played by Robert DeNiro? And Jesse Plemons, Lizzie Caplan, Connie Britton and Angela Bassett are also in the cast? And the showrunner is Eric Newman, whose credits include Narcos and Griselda? That should be enough to get your eyes on at least the first episode, right?

31st Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards

Honestly, you’ve got to be a pretty hardcore awards junkie to sit through anything beyond the Golden Globes and Oscars, but if you want to get a jump on handicapping the latter, the SAGs offer a hint on which way the industry is leaning. Kristen Bell hosts, and Jane Fonda is receiving a lifetime achievement honor.

Demon City

A hitman seeks revenge for the murder of his family in this live-action adaptation of the manga series Oni-Goroshi. A basic premise, yes, but the comic is famously violent, and if nothing else, the costume design of the masked criminal gang at the story’s centre looks remarkably freaky.

Mindy Kaling does Ted Lasso? Is that what we’re getting? Seems like it. In the latest series created by the Office alum, Kate Hudson is a party girl turned girl boss when she’s put in charge of the family business: a pro-basketball team modelled on the LA Lakers. If you already fancy Kaling’s brand of romcom-meets-sitcom, there’s no reason to believe this’ll be much different.
