Every once in a while, a movie comes along that completely captivates Netflix. Some big standouts include Don’t Look Up, Spenser Confidential and The Mitchells vs. The Machines. But, as you can see, all of those movies were released several years ago. Since 2021, it’s become increasingly rare for movies to put up these kinds of viewership numbers, with Carry-On’s record-breaking run just last month being one of the few standouts in recent memory. But it just so happens that a recent Netflix release topped what might be Netflix’s biggest movie ever, Red Notice, in one particular metric.
We’re talking about Back in Action, of course, the most recent Netflix juggernaut that stars Cameron Diaz and Jamie Foxx. The movie centers on their characters, Emily and Matt, two retired CIA spies who are forced back into the fold after their secret identities are discovered. They must employ old skills to both protect their children and retrieve a key they hid years ago. And while we certainly expected an action movie starring two big celebrities—especially Diaz, who hadn’t acted in a decade—to do well on Netflix, I’m not sure anyone expected this dominant of a run.
Especially one that now stands alongside—and has, in fact, passed—Red Notice. While the action movie starring Gal Gadot, Ryan Reynolds and Dwayne Johnson is technically the most successful Netflix movie of all time, as it has garnered 230.9 million views and 454.2 million viewing hours (both are records) since its 2021 release, those numbers were accrued over a very short time span. Believe it or not, Red Notice only sat atop the daily U.S. Top 10 charts for 12 days—a figure that, just today, Back in Action has surpassed.
In fact, only 12 other movies have ever reached Back in Action’s current streak of 13 days in the #1 position. And, as you can see below, this brings the brand new action flick into exclusive company with some of the most viral Netflix movies ever released:
- Carry-On – 21 days
- Don’t Look Up – 18 days
- Spenser Confidential – 18 days
- The Adam Project – 15 days
- Glass Onion: A Knives Out Story – 14 days
- The Unforgivable – 14 days
- The Mitchells vs. The Machines – 14 days
- Hubie Halloween – 14 days
- Back in Action – 13 days
- Leave the World Behind – 13 days
- Back in Action – 11 days
- Extraction 2 – 13 days
- Project Power – 13 days
And the movie probably isn’t done yet. As I reported earlier this week, the only upcoming release that may pose a serious challenge to Back in Action is the Amy Schumer comedy Kinda Pregnant, which doesn’t release until Feb. 5. At that point, Back in Action will have spent 19 days on the Netflix platform—giving it the chance to go where only Carry-On has gone before with its #1 streak.
It’s also worth noting that Back in Action registered an additional 46.8 million views worldwide between Jan. 20-26, bringing its total during its first nine days on Netflix to 93.6 million views. That means the film needs only 42.8 million views to become the tenth-most-viewed movie ever on Netflix. And with 50 million more views, the movie would pass We Can Be Heroes, Damsel, The Gray Man and Leave the World Behind to achieve sixth place on that list.
Obviously, it’s unlikely that Back in Action would ever come near Red Notice’s 230.9 million views in the overall viewership numbers. Nor will the film eclipse We Can Be Heroes on the all-time Top 10 rankings—a ranking system I devised that rewards movies based on how long they remain on the Top 10 charts and how dominant they are throughout that run. Here are the current top ten movies (non-animated) for those rankings:
- We Can Be Heroes – 418 points
- Red Notice – 355 points
- Glass Onion: A Knives Out Story – 340 points
- Don’t Look Up – 335 points
- How the Grinch Stole Christmas – 299 points
- 365 Days – 282 points
- The Adam Project – 279 points
- The Christmas Chronicles 2 – 241 points
- Spenser Confidential – 236 points
- Carry-On – 234 points
But still, it’s incredible to see a movie like Back in Action commanding the charts in ways that we’ve rarely seen since 2021. And it’s easily become the most successful thus far in 2025, as you can see from the yearly Top 10 rankings:
- Back in Action – 130 points
- Ad Vitam – 115 points
- Rush Hour – 77 points
- Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1 – 73 points
- In the Heart of the Sea – 70 points
- You Gotta Believe – 59 points
- Carry-On – 54 points
- Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga – 51 points
- The Watchers – 48 points
- Scream VI – 44 points
At this point, we’re monitoring Back in Action just to see how dominant this run can remain. Like I said, if no other movie poses a challenge anytime soon, the Diaz/Foxx vehicle will approach territory rarely seen on the Netflix charts.
