The Indian film Rifle Club is the only Indian content that managed to climb on the weekly list of most-watched non-English films and shows on Netflix. For the week ending January 26, the Malayalam film ranked at the eighth slot on the Netflix list. The film, directed by Ashiq Abu, the film maintained its rank on the list for the second consecutive week. The French film Ad Vitam topped the list of most-watched non-English films while the Lebanese war film The Sand Castle came a distant second on the list.
Rifle Club features Bollywood filmmaker Anurag Kashyap in a villainous role and he is receiving wide critical acclaim for his performance in the film which also stars Dileesh Pothan, Vijayaraghavan, Vani Viswanath, Vineeth Kumar, and Suresh Krishna.
Malayalam film ‘Rifle Club’ on Netflix Global Top 10 For Two Weeks In A Row
Ashiq Abu (Maheshinte Prathikaaram) directed and produced Rifle Club which made it to the eighth slot on Netflix’s weekly list of most-watched non-English films. It has registered 0.9 million views and 1.7 million watch hours for the week ending January 26. The film recorded 1 million views and 1.9 million watch-hours on the platform in just three days after the digital premiere on January 16.
When it hit theatres in December last year, Rifle Club created quite a storm and movie buffs as well as critics showered it with praises. It has been written by Dileesh Karunakaran, Suhas, and Syam Pushkaran and produced by Vishal Vincent Tony and Vincent Vadakkan.
Kashyap plays the main antagonist in Rifle Club that marks the acting debut of rapper Hanumankind. Kashyap, who is best known for creating much-loved movies such as Gangs of Wasseypur and Manmarziyaan, also makes his Malayalam debut with the film. Apart from making guest appearances in his own directorial ventures, Kashyap has previously acted in films such as Akira, AK Vs AK, Haddi, and Maharaja.
Rifle Club is set in a wild world where a group of hunters enjoy tales of brave hunting escapades over dinner and every individual has a favorite gun on them all the time. Their world of violent, but honorable codes is disrupted after an actor approaches them hoping to learn hunting for his next film to look more authentic. He is soon followed by his close friends, a couple who have a dreaded arms dealer (Anurag Kashyap) after their lives. The film is set in a trigger-happy world, but it renders a poetic tone to the visual representation of the violence.
Last Week, Rifle Club was joined by another Indian project on Netflix’s weekly global list. Netflix India original Black Warrant ranked on the tenth slot on the list of most-watched non-English shows for the week ending January 19. Based on Indian journalist Sunetra Choudhary and former jailor Sunil Kumar Gupta’s book Black Warrant Confessions of a Jailor, the show is created by Vikramaditya Motwane. The show recorded 2.3 million views in its debut weekend on Netflix. Featuring Zahaan Kapoor, and Rahul Bhat in lead roles, the show is directed by Satyanshu Singh, Arkesh Ajay, Ambiecka Pandit, and Rohin Raveendran Nair. Applause Entertainment, Andolan Production and Confluence Media have produced the show which also stars Anurag Thakur, Paramvir Singh Cheema, and Sidhant Gupta.
