Wes Anderson‘s new movie, The Phoenician Scheme, is set for a limited release in cinemas on May 30th before a wider release on June 16th after Focus Features secured distribution rights.

At this stage, the plot details for The Phoenician Scheme have largely been kept under wraps. While little is known about what the movie entails, it has been described as “the story of a family and a family business”.

Benicio del Toro stars in the movie as Zsa-zsa Korda who is one of Europe’s wealthiest men. Meanwhile, Mia Threapleton also features as Sister Liesl, Korda’s daughter who is also a nun, and Michael Cera plays tutor Bjorn Lund.

The star-studded cast also boasts Tom Hanks, Bryan Cranston, Riz Ahmed, Mathieu Amalric, Jeffrey Wright, Scarlett Johansson, Richard Ayoade, Rupert Friend, Hope Davis and Benedict Cumberbatch.

Cera was among one of the first names to be officially announced for the project with Anderson telling Deadline in 2023: “We have Michael Cera. He’s one of the other characters in this new story. And he’s somebody I probably met, I think, close to 20 years ago. At least 18 years ago, something like that. I met him with Harvey Keitel, so it must have been 2008 or something. But, anyway, Michael Cera. That’s one”.

Anderson wrote the script for The Phoenician Scheme and the story is co-written by Roman Coppola, who is a frequent collaborator of the director. Filming was undertaken in Germany.

The filmmaker consistently works with the same people on his movies, such as Coppola, which applied to The Phoenician Scheme. “This film I just finished making in Germany, there must be a hundred people on the film who have worked with me on other films,” Anderson said last year at Annecy (via The Hollywood Reporter). “It could be more who come back — and lots of castmembers.”
