Stree 2 writer Niren Bhatt claimed that this is the worst time for writers in the Bollywood industry.
Screenwriter Niren Bhatt has penned some of the biggest blockbusters of Bollywood including Stree 2, Munjya and Bhediya. He recently attended the Indian Screenwriters Conference (ISC) where he shared his thoughts on the remake culture in Bollywood. Niren expressed his disappointment and said that the entire system is ‘broken’.
Niren Bhatt, the lead writer behind the Maddock Horror Comedy Universe, addressed the challenges facing the Hindi film industry’s writing community at the 7th edition of ISC. Speaking at the event, hosted by the Screenwriters Association of India (SWA) on Friday, Bhatt said that the industry’s writers are experiencing a significant crisis.
During the session titled The Mainstream Reality, Niren Bhatt was joined by Pathaan dialogue writer Abbas Tyrewala, screenwriter Kanika Dhillon, and Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 writer Aakash Kaushik. The discussion was moderated by Hitesh Kewalya, the writer of Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan.
Niren Bhatt said, “There are two pictures- One is very bleak; all writers are struggling; this is the worst time for writers in the industry but then it’s up to you how to navigate. I think this is also the best time because all the established rules are broken. The entire system is broken. So only disruptors will survive and writers are the biggest disruptors. People who are sticking to their guns, their films aren’t working. It is the best time for disruption.”
Niren further discussed the importance of original storytelling and slammed remakes. “Out of 25 remakes post-pandemic, 23 are flops. The only way to succeed is to make original content,” he added.
Collaborating with the Maddock Horror Comedy Universe again, the writer is now contributing to upcoming films such as Thama, starring Ayushmann Khurrana and Rashmika Mandanna, Stree 3, and Bhediya 2, featuring Varun Dhawan.
Kiran Rao, Shoojit Sarkar, Nikkhil Advani, Dibakar Banerjee, Biswapati Sarkar, and Anand Tiwari will also be seen attending the ISC now.
