Music is a key part of the Bollywood industry, and so are the musicians. Over the years, Indian cinema has seen various artists, playback singers, songwriters and more, who made people dance to their tunes. Similarly, there was a legendary guitarist who created the iconic theme song of Karz. However, sadly, he is not known to many. The Bass guitarist that we are talking about is Gorakh Sharma.
Gorakh Sharma is the son of a renowned trumpeter, Pandit Ramprasad Sharma. Under his father’s guidance, Gorakh learned the art of playing various string instruments and reading music notations. Over the years, Sharma has shown his magic by playing mandolin, mandola, rubab, and numerous types of guitars like the acoustic, jazz, twelve-string, and electric guitar.
Gorakh started playing the mandolin when he was 14 years old. After that, he studied guitar under Anibal Castro, a well-known guitarist who developed into a skilled, distinctive musician whose ability to play the mandolin combined with guitar was magical.
Gorakh Sharma became the first to play the bass guitar in the Indian film industry. He is also the younger brother of Pyarelal from the Laxmikant–Pyarelal duo. Gorakh was a part of a small musical group named Suril Kala Kendra. Apart from Sharma, the group had many artists including Hridaynath Mangeshkar, Usha Mangeshkar, Meena Mangeshkar, Laxmikant Kudalkar and Gorakh’s elder brother, Pyarelal Sharma. All of the people earned decent names and fame.
In the 1960s, Gorakh got an opportunity to show his talent by playing mandolin and even by working with director Ravi on the song, Chaudhvin Ka Chaand. Soon, Sharma started working with big names in the industry, such as Ravi, Shankar-Jaikishen, and Kalyanji Anandji.
Over the years, Gorakh Sharma has worked on more than 1000 songs and also made beautiful melodious tunes for over 500 films. These movies include Shah Rukh Khan, Sunny Deol, Juhi Chawla-starrer Darr, Karz, and Aashiqui. All the movies were a blockbuster and the audience to date loves to hear the songs of these films.
Some of the famous works of Gorakh Sharma are Jaadoo Teri Nazar, Saason Ki Zaroorat Hain Jaise, Ek Hasina Thi, Hum Bane Tum Bane, Main Shayar Toh Nahin and Mere Mehboob Qayamat Hogi among others. – Rectify grammatical mistakes, punctuation mistakes in the article without changing any content.
