Martin Scorsese has cast  Dwayne Johnson in his upcoming movie – and fans are more than a little uncertain about this casting choice.

It has been announced that the lauded director and Leonardo DiCaprio have been attached to produce a new film.

The Hawaii-Set movie has been compared to Goodfellas and The Departed.

The film has cast Emily Blunt and The Rock, who both starred in the flop Disney movie Jungle Cruise together.

Deadline revealed that the thumbnail description reads: ‘ Imagine Robert De Niro’s Jimmy the Gent character from Goodfellas, but as a ruthless Hawaiian crime boss, based on a real figure, who battled encroaching rivals for control of organized crime in Hawaii.’

Fans have been surprised to learn that Johnson has been cast in a film by the highly acclaimed director, with many expressing their scepticism online.

‘Dwayne Johnson in a Scorsese crime film? Curious to see how this plays out,’ said thecinemadog.

‘I’m skeptical because of Dwayne Johnson, but I’m interested,’ said YngJackieAprile.

‘The Rock seems very random in between the other two lol i hope I’m wrong,’ said SDverse6.

Johnson has become best known for appearing in comedy or action roles. His most notable film appearances include: Jumanji, Moana, Tooth Fairy, and Central Intelligence.

Although in total his films have grossed over $3.5 billion in North America and over $12.5 billion worldwide, the former professional wrestler is not best known for his acting skills.

Some commenters suggested that this new film could be a great opportunity for him to show his ‘acting chops’.

‘The rock finally has his serious movie. Here’s his chance to show his chops be intrigued to see how this goes,’ said Wrestle_G on X.

‘God father Rock. Will this is a breakthrough of Rock from all the cringe characters he has been performing all his career?’ said Da90sGamer.

Scorsese has been behind a number of epic films including The Departed, Gangs of New York, and The Wolf of Wall Street.

The film will be written by Nick Bilton, and will focus on a mob boss who builds the island’s most powerful criminal empire while waging a war against rival syndicates and attempting to preserve ancestral land.

The story is reportedly based on an untold true story of a Hawaiian crime boss who operated during the sixties and seventies.

Although character casting has not been confirmed, it is likely given Johnson’s Polynesian heritage that he is the most likely candidate to play the Hawaiian Jimmy the Gent-like lead.
