James Gunn has shared some new comments about his favorite superhero movies.

Gunn’s Superman movie is now playing in United States theaters. The DC Studios and Warner Bros. Pictures movie stars David Corenswet as the titular superhero, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor.

Prior to Superman and taking over DC Studios alongside Peter Safran, Gunn previously helmed the Guardians of the Galaxy movies for Marvel Studios. He also directed 2021’s The Suicide Squad and created the popular spin-off series, Peacemaker, that debuted in January 2022.

What did James Gunn say about his favorite superhero movies?

Earlier this month, Gunn appeared on the Armchair Expert with Dax Shepard podcast and was asked about what his favorite superhero movies ever are.

“Into the Spider-Verse, the first one, is the greatest,” he said at the time. “Donner’s Superman. Iron Man. Iron Man, really — I’d say Iron Man is great. I’m forgetting something.”

Speaking with Kobini, Gunn once again addressed the matter.

Regarding Iron Man, Gunn said, “Iron Man, I think that — we were talking today, Peter Safran and I were talking, [about] what’s really the best superhero movie. Now, I think Into the Spider-Verse is the best superhero movie ever made. But, in terms of live-action superhero movies, it just might be Iron Man.”

He further said about Into Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, “I think [it’s] probably one of the greatest animated films of all time. Definitely up there with the best of Pixar and everything. I just think it’s majestic, it’s beautiful, it’s emotional, and artistic. It’s everything that you want out of a movie. Doesn’t matter that it’s a superhero movie or not. It’s beautiful.”

While it is not yet known what DCU project Gunn will direct next, he wrote all of the episodes for Peacemaker Season 2, which premieres on HBO Max on August 21, 2025.
