A solid action movie featuring a Love/Hate star is on TV tonight
The film also features a major A-lister in one of his earliest roles.
Our TV movie pick for tonight (Wednesday, 5 November) is 12 Rounds, the 2009 action film starring John Cena (Heads of State, Peacemaker) and Aidan Gillen (Love/Hate, Kin).
Set in a post-Hurricane Katrina New Orleans, the story follows cop Danny Fisher (Cena), who prevents criminal mastermind Miles Jackson (Gillen) from successfully carrying out his latest heist.
While fleeing from the police, Miles’ girlfriend is accidentally killed. Hungry for revenge, the thief breaks out of prison and kidnaps Danny’s fiancée (Ashley Scott, The Last of Us games).
“To save her, Danny must successfully navigate his way through an elaborate series of tasks and puzzles, or else watch the love of his life die,” the plot synopsis adds.
Produced by WWE Studios, perhaps in an effort to turn their wrestling star into a movie star à la The Rock, 12 Rounds earned mixed reviews from critics.
A common source of criticism was its derivative screenplay, which has a plot very similar to that of Die Hard with a Vengeance. In fact, 12 Rounds was actually directed by Renny Harlin, the director of a different Die Hard sequel, Die Hard 2.
Cena’s movie isn’t groundbreaking by any stretch, but it is action-packed and pacy. Plus, it benefits from an atmospheric setting and a fun villain turn from Gillen.
While 12 Rounds wasn’t a huge hit, it did well enough to garner two stand-alone sequels starring different wrestlers: 12 Rounds 2: Reloaded (with Randy Orton) and 12 Rounds 3: Lockdown (with Dean Ambrose).
The original is airing on TV tonight on the channel Legend at 9pm. 12 Rounds is also streaming on Disney+.
