Aamir Khan Opens Up On Doing Films That Address Social Issues
Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan has starred in countless films in a career span of over three decades. Many of his films such as Taare Zameen Par, Dangal, Rang De Basanti, PK, and many others addressed important social issues, and sparked meaningful conversations. Now, during a chat at Indian Film Festival of India 2025 (IFFI), he revealed that while many of his films address social issues, it happened organically and was never a deliberate choice. He said that he is a film personality, not an activist, and that his main goal is to entertain his audience.
Aamir Khan On Doing Films Addressing Social Issues
At IFFI, Aamir Khan revealed how he chooses scripts. “I choose films purely based on my emotional excitement for the story, even if it goes completely against the norm. Most of my decisions have been impractical by industry standards. When we made Lagaan, even Javed Saab advised us not to. By all logic, I shouldn’t have become a star, I broke every rule. But somehow, those unconventional choices connected with people and I’m deeply grateful,” he said. He further added, “Whether it’s Taare Zameen Par, 3 Idiots, Dangal or Laapataa Ladies, the foundation was laid by the writers. They created the worlds and the characters; I simply gravitated towards scripts that moved me.”
He also explained that he doesn’t deliberately choose films that shed light on social issues. “Many of my films address social issues, but that happened organically, not by design. I am a complete film personality, not an activist. My primary objective is to entertain my audience,” he said.
Meanwhile, at IFFI 2025, Aamir Khan also paid tribute to Dharmendra, and recalled fond memories with him. During the interaction, he also revealed that Dharam ji watched Sunny Deol starrer ‘Lahore 1947’ before he passed away. Aamir said that he is extremely glad he got to show Dharmendra the film as it was one of his favourite scripts. For the unversed, ‘Lahore 1947’ is produced by Aamir Khan and helmed by Rajkumar Santoshi. It is based on Asghar Wajahat’s renowned play ‘Jis Lahore Nai Dekhya, O Jamyai Ni.’
Aamir said that he is fortunate he got to spend some time with Dharmendra before his death. “In fact, Lahore 1947, the film we have made with Sunny, I had the good fortune of showing him the film. So he has seen the film,” said Aamir. He further added, “It’s not released yet, of course. But I am so glad he got to see the film. Because this was one of his favourite scripts.”
