I was truly shocked when I looked at Netflix’s lineup for March 2025. While I love everything the platform has to offer, they don’t always satisfy my thirst for hard-hitting, character-driven stories, and they don’t always bring in the most interesting features from independent studios. But this month is different, as you can expect several different movie options that quench said thirst, including an incredible new portrait of overcoming addiction starring Saoirse Ronan, a twist on the “bucket list” trope in movies where a young woman rebuilds herself and one of the more electrifying independent features of the past few years. Plus, there are two additional action movies that offer both sci-fi spectacle and gritty heist action. Those five movies make up my top recommendations for the month.

The Best New Movies On Netflix In March 2025

The Electric State (2025)

Millie Bobby Brown, Chris Pratt, Ke Huy Quan, Anthony Mackie, Woody Harrelson—this is the cast of what is undoubtedly Netflix’s biggest new feature in March, The Electric State. And guess what? That’s just the tip of the iceberg for this imaginative sci-fi flick from Anthony and Joe Russo, the brothers most known for directing Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. This post-apocalyptic adventure brings audiences into a reimagined version of the 1990s, where the aftermath of a catastrophic war between humans and robots has left the world fractured. The Electric State follows Michelle (played by Brown), who journeys across a retro-futuristic American landscape to find her missing younger brother. Along for the ride are a small robot companion and a smuggler named Keats (Pratt), who reluctantly agrees to help her. Together, they navigate a society where sentient robots, once peacefully integrated into daily life, have now been banished to a dangerous Exclusion Zone after a failed uprising. The cast also features Brian Cox, Jenny Slate, Jason Alexander, Stanley Tucci, Giancarlo Esposito—seriously, I could keep going. Just watch this star-studded sci-fi event.

The Outrun (2024)

Year in and year out, Saoirse Ronan delivers the most compelling performances of anyone in Hollywood. And in Nora Fingscheidt’s incredible independent feature, The Outrun, Ronan utilizes her fearless approach to channel a woman named Rona’s self-destructive impulses, her profound regret and, ultimately, her gradual path toward healing. After years of struggling with alcoholism and self-destruction in London’s chaotic party scene, Rona returns to her childhood home in the remote Orkney Islands of Scotland to rebuild her life. Compelled by her hometown to confront her past, Rona works to reconnect with her estranged family while taking on work at a local farm and a summer job studying the area’s wildlife. Adapted from Amy Liptrot’s memoir, the film blends present-day moments with glimpses of Rona’s turbulent past, creating a visually immersive and emotionally raw portrait of healing and solitude. Ronan captures the volatility of addiction with visceral honesty, portraying Rona as someone constantly on the edge—at times magnetic and free-spirited, at others heartbreakingly fragile and lost. Through every shift in mood, every desperate plea, every moment of quiet reflection, Ronan brings a haunting authenticity her role in The Outrun, making Rona’s journey feel deeply lived-in.

Den of Thieves 2: Pantera (2025)

If the original Den of Thieves wore its Heat influence unabashedly on its sleeve, then perhaps the movie we should immediately think of for its sequel, Den of Thieves 2: Pantera, is the sleek, tightly orchestrated Ronin, which embraces a more procedural approach to crime storytelling. This sequel picks up years after the audacious Federal Reserve heist, where Detective Nick O’Brien (Gerard Butler) is still obsessed with tracking down Donnie Wilson (O’Shea Jackson Jr.), the criminal mastermind who slipped through his fingers. When a high-profile diamond theft in Antwerp leads straight to Donnie, Nick follows the trail to France where Donnie awaits. But instead of taking his enemy down, Nick unexpectedly inserts himself into Donnie’s crew as they prepare for an even bigger target: the World Diamond Authority. As the team meticulously plans the operation, navigating high-tech security, rival criminals and personal betrayals, Nick’s shifting loyalties blur the line between cop and criminal. Rather than going bigger and flashier like so many action sequels, director Christian Gudegast leans into the granular mechanics of the heist itself with Pantera, immersing the audience in the intricate planning and uneasy alliances that define the job.

Den of Thieves 2: Pantera will be available to stream on Netflix starting March 20, 2025.

The Life List (2025)

There have been plenty of “bucket list” movies made over the years, but they usually feature a protagonist who is looking for reinvigoration late in life. In steps The Life List with an intriguing twist on said premise, as our main character, Alex Rose (played by Sofia Carson), is young yet unable to understand herself or find direction in life. Thus, she embarks upon a life-changing journey after her mother, Elizabeth (Connie Britton), tasks Alex with completing a “life list” her wrote as a teenager—a collection of dreams and goals she once hoped to accomplish. From performing at an open mic night to volunteering at a women’s shelter, Alex’s quest takes her across New York City and reconnects her with parts of herself she had long forgotten. Along the way, she discovers unexpected romance with Brad (Kyle Allen), unearths long-buried family secrets and deepens her bonds with her brothers (Dario Ladani Sanchez and Federico Rodriguez) and friends. Directed by Adam Brooks and based on the novel by Lori Nelson Spielman, The Life List aims to balance whimsy with deeply relatable emotional stakes and turn a familiar setup into something that feels universal.

How to Have Sex (2023)

As much as I love Netflix, they’ve never been a beacon for independent cinema. That’s why I’ve always had a subscription to Mubi, which specializes in raw, piercing cinema that largely exists outside the studio system. And one particular independent film, How to Have Sex, has only ever existed on the Mubi platform since its release in 2023. But that all changes this month as this messy, complicated depiction of teenage sexuality makes its way to Netflix. The film centers on Tara (Mia McKenna-Bruce), who heads to a party hotspot in the Mediterranean with her two best friends, ready for a carefree holiday filled with drinking and clubbing before adulthood takes hold (à la Spring Breakers). But before long, the party atmosphere wears off and Tara finds herself navigating confusing and sometimes frightening experiences with sex and consent. How to Have Sex is written and directed by Molly Manning Walker, who depicts the sort of “party life” romanticized by the naive with a visceral, almost documentary-like authenticity, capturing the euphoric highs and uncomfortable lows of binge drinking, hookups and the constant pressure to perform as though you have all the confidence in the world.
