The ’90s action sequel is a surprisingly timely blockbuster.
Our TV movie pick for tonight (Wednesday, 11 June) is Tomorrow Never Dies, Pierce Brosnan’s second outing as James Bond.
The 1997 spy film pits 007 against deranged media mogul Elliot Carver (Jonathan Price), who is staging political incidents that could provoke a third World War.
This is with the goal of expanding his media company’s influence and power worldwide.
Bond travels to China to stop the news tycoon. In his quest, he is helped by Chinese secret agent Wai Lin (Michelle Yeoh), as well as Paris Carver (Teri Hatcher), a former girlfriend of Bond who is now Carver’s trophy wife.
Tomorrow Never Dies is one of the best Bond movies of the Brosnan era.
This is thanks to its muscular action set-pieces, its kick-ass supporting turn from future Oscar-winner Yeoh and its all too contemporary villain.
While Carver’s plan back in the ’90s may have seemed far-fetched, a media mogul spreading fake news to benefit themselves feels all the more possible now.
JOE recently interviewed Yeoh and asked her about who should be the next James Bond. You can read her answer right here.
Tomorrow Never Dies is airing on TV tonight on ITV4 at 9pm. It’s also currently streaming in the UK on MGM+.
