An action movie with two film icons that throws all logic out the window is airing on TV tonight (Thursday, June 19) for free across the UK.

Nothing beats a good popcorn movie, a viewing experience that doesn’t require much thinking and only looks to deliver thrills.

Most of the time they can get away with having popular A-listers getting into intense life or death situations.

The scripts aren’t Pulitzer worthy and no one involved is going to win any Oscars, but they’re an essential part of the movie experience.

Sometimes all we want as film fans is to sit at home, have a big drink, snacks and watch something where we don’t have to stress about digesting information.

One of the films that did this better than any so far this decade, paired two of cinemas’ most legendary monsters against each other.

Released in 2021, Godzilla vs. Kong serves up a battle which originally took place in 1962’s King Kong vs. Godzilla.

With both Kong and Godzilla getting various movies between them over the course of the 2010s, it was only right that they got to go toe to toe once again.

Marking the 36th film in the Godzilla franchise, the 12th film in the King Kong franchise, all you need to know is that these guys don’t like each other.

The film sees the monsters clashing after the evil Monarch organisation moves the ape from Skull Island to the Hollow Earth, the homeworld of the monsters known as ‘Titans’.

Seeking to retrieve a power source for a secret weapon intended to stop Godzilla’s mysterious attacks, the organisation quickly realise they’ve made a mistake putting the beasts together.

The star-studded cast includes Succession’s Alexander Skarsgard, Millie Bobby Brown, Rebecca Hall, Brian Tyree Henry, Shun Oguri, Eiza González, Julian Dennison, Lance Reddick, Kyle Chandler and Demián Bichir.

Father and daughter Brown and Chandler reprise their roles from the previous Godzilla film as two of the only people who realise the gravity of the situation.

Initially announced in 2015 when Legendary Pictures declared its plans for a new cinematic universe, the film was delayed from its initial 2020 release date due to the pandemic.

Eventually hitting cinemas in 2021, the film was controversially released simultaneously on HBO Max in the United States.

Boasting a production budget of up to $200 million, the film managed to gross $470 million worldwide, at a time where cinemas were struggling and earned a sequel which was released last year.

While critics are normally harsh on these kinds of movies, Godzilla vs. Kong received a respectable 76% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Its critical consensus reads: “Delivering squarely on its title, Godzilla vs. Kong swats away character development and human drama to deliver all the spectacle you’d expect from giant monsters slugging it out.”

Godzilla vs. Kong airs on Thursday, June 19, on ITV1 and ITVX at 11.15pm
