A sci-fi action film starring Jason Statham is coming to Amazon Prime Video this week, after leaving viewers massively divided.
The 57-year-old led the way in shark movie the Meg, in 2018, alongside Rainn Wilson, Ruby Rose, Winston Chao, Li Bingbing and Cliff Curtis.
The flick followed rescue diver Jonas Taylor (Jason) as he leads a group of scientists on a rescue mission in the Pacific Ocean, as they encounter a terrifying 75-ft megalodon.
Despite some poor reviews, it went on to rake in more than $530million at the global box office, leading to a sequel in 2023.
Thankfully, we can all relive the chaos as the Meg will be coming to Amazon Prime on February 23.
It currently commands a less than ideal Rotten Tomatoes critics score of 47%, compared to an audience ranking of 44% – but many have branded it the ultimate guilty pleasure movie on the platform.
Izzy O wrote: ‘This is my favourite comfort movie. It’s a little cheesy yes, but that’s what makes it charming. The cast are also great. It’s wild to me that this is rated so poorly.
‘Not every movie needs to be some thought provoking masterpiece people [sic].’
Dave C said: ‘I said I’d never watch it… but then the ‘playing next’ feature on Amazon Prime started playing it and I didn’t turn it off. Glad I didn’t, on the whole, as apart from the first 20mins or so, it is an actually a pretty decent shark flick.
‘There are elements of Titanic and Deep Blue Sea both in terms of the drama, humour, and some of the acting, but it also entertains as well as they both do, so I found myself enjoying it.’
‘This was very entertaining and way better than Jaws and all their sequels. A must see movie!!!,’ Mark P insisted.
Griffith J posted: ‘It’s ridiculous & dumb but the entertainment factor is through the roof.
‘Embrace the outrageous & ignore the attempt at wacky characters & you’ll have so much fun. The pace is unrelenting with intense shark tropes & striking lighting.’
As CJ P added: ‘I think this movie is extremely underrated. Jason Statham was awesome in this movie and he’s even better in the sequel. The shark action is very entertaining and I hope they keep making these.’
Following the success of the first movie, Meg 2: The Trench, swam onto the big screen in 2023 and grossed nearly $400million worldwide.
Director Ben Wheatley previously touched on whether we could get a third instalment on our hands, sharing that there was ‘a lot more to explore’ with the characters.
‘You don’t want to talk about it until Meg 2 is out,’ he told Total Film ahead of the sequel being released. ’But I hope so. There’s a lot more to explore in that world. It’s very rich. The international-ness of it is very interesting.
‘What’s so smart about the first film is that it’s not Rush Hour. It’s not East-meets-West, “Oh, we’re all confused about each other.
‘It’s just people working together, and being in an everyday adventure, and the people just happen to come from places all over the world. I think that’s good for audiences, and it’s a good message as well.’
The Meg will be available to stream on Amazon Prime Video on February 23.
