Netflix viewers are hooked on ‘one of the best thrillers’ that promises to keep you on the edge of your seat.
Cellular, although a recent addition to Netflix‘s ever-evolving library, was originally released in 2004. The film features Chris Evans, long before his iconic roles as Captain America and Johnny Storm in Fantastic Four.
In Cellular, Evans portrays Ryan, a man trying to win back his ex-girlfriend by helping her at a charity event. His plans take a drastic turn when he receives a call from a stranger, Jessica, played by Kim Bassinger, who claims she has been kidnapped and is in grave danger. The catch? She doesn’t know her location and his mobile phone battery is running low.
The star-studded cast also includes Jessica Alba, William H Macy, and Jason Statham as one of the menacing kidnappers.
Directed by David R. Ellis, this film followed his success with Final Destination 2. He later directed Snakes on A Plane and The Final Destination before his untimely death in 2013 at the age of 60.
The screenplay marked the debut for writer Chris Morgan, who went on to write several Fast and the Furious titles, Wanted, and most recently, the Amazon Prime Christmas film Red One, reports Surrey Live.
Since being added to Netflix, it appears that viewers are relishing the chance to revisit the film. At present, Cellular is ranked as the fifth most-watched movie in the UK among subscribers, trailing behind new releases such as Kinda Pregnant and Back In Action, as well as animated classic Shrek.
Despite receiving a lukewarm response from critics upon its initial cinema release, Cellular continues to hold a dedicated fanbase.
One fan shared their thoughts online, stating: “Cellular is probably one of the best thrillers I’ve seen so far (best is Phone Booth). The movie manages to keep you at the edge of your seat and continues to create suspense.
They continued: “This movie is probably flawless. Moreover, the performance of the cast was impeccable. Kim Basinger did a very good job, but the driving force of the film is Chris Evans. I was astonished when I saw the reviews of this film, it is immensely underrated. Cellular deserves to be given more attention and respect.”
Another viewer chimed in with: “When I got the chance to watch this movie I didn’t know what to expect. I decided to watch when I saw the name of Jason Statham and Chris Evans. But guess what? This is one of the most underrated movies.
“It’s an amazing thriller which will keep you on your toes. Damn good. It’s intense, action packed, an unpredictable script and more importantly they knew what they were doing.”
