Why Dean Competes With Wes In One Fast Move’s Ending Race
Dean Learns From His Past Mistakes
In One Fast Move‘s final arc, Wes is surprised when he finds his father, Dean, at the race’s venue. When he asks him what he is doing there, Dean tells him that he is making his comeback by racing again. Although Dean gives Wes a run for his money in the final race, he eventually crashes, which leads to Wes’ win. When Wes goes to the crash site after his win, Dean initially seems disheartened but then raises his fist to celebrate his son’s victory. This scene highlights that Dean showed up for the race because Wes helped him realize how he threw his life away after his injury.
Throughout the film’s runtime, Dean keeps coming up with excuses to justify why his racing career led to nothing, even though he was promising during his early years. Towards the end of the film, however, Wes opens up his eyes to what he has been doing. This inspires Dean to race again. He seemingly enrolls in the final race with the hope of making a comeback.
…even when he loses the race after crashing, he emerges victorious because he finally manages to do something that benefits his son.
However, unknowingly, he also ends up pushing Wes to perform way better than he otherwise would have. Owing to this, even when he loses the race after crashing, he emerges victorious because he finally manages to do something that benefits his son. Throughout One Fast Move‘s runtime, Dean’s vices keep rubbing off on Wes, preventing him from reaching his true potential. In the final race, however, his direct involvement in Wes’ journey as a racer allows Wes to push the limits of his abilities.
The Real Reason Why Dean Took Wes Under His Wing
Wes Was His Golden Ticket
Wes initially believes Dean is helping him with his racing dreams because he owes it to him as his father. However, the more One Fast Move progresses, the more it becomes evident that Dean cares less about Wes’ aspirations and more about chasing his own lost dreams. He sees Wes as his golden ticket to achieve everything he could not with his racing endeavors. As soon as he realizes Wes is a talented bike racer, he starts pushing him to perform well without caring about his well-being.
…Dean was only using Wes as a vessel to fulfill his own unrealized dreams instead of nurturing him to become a better person than him in the future.
Dean even intentionally creates differences between Wes and his girlfriend, Camila, believing Camila will distract him from becoming a better racer. This proves that Dean was only using Wes as a vessel to fulfill his own unrealized dreams instead of nurturing him to become a better father and husband in the future. Fortunately, Dean realizes this towards the end of One Fast Move and takes one step towards correctly guiding Wes by joining him in the final race.
Why Wes Chose To Train Under Dean As A Bike Racer
Wes Wanted To Know Him
In One Fast Move‘s opening arc, Wes keeps claiming that he is not looking for a father figure every time someone questions why he reconciled with Dean. However, in the film’s final arc, he finally confesses that he showed up to meet Dean because he wished to know more about him. This establishes that even though he might not have been seeking a father figure, a part of him always missed Dean after he abandoned him and his mother. He probably grew up resenting his father after what he did to him and his mother.
As a result, Wes never truly got to know him and probably even picked up street racing to understand what his father loved about bikes. When street racing led to his arrest, Wes realized that he could only forgive his father and heal from his childhood abandonment if he learned more about him. Although initially meeting Dean only disappointed him, Wes eventually gets to see a better side of his father.

Why Dean Abandoned Wes & His Mother
He Was Afraid
After an argument with Wes in One Fast Move‘s ending arc, Dean finally owns up to his mistakes and opens up about why he abandoned Wes and his mother. He recalls that his father often used to beat him up as a child, and he wished that his father would just get up and leave. His childhood experiences made him believe that he, too, would never be a good father to his son. Therefore, instead of putting his son through the same pain and disappointment he endured as a child, Dean distanced himself from his family.
He believed he was sparing them from the cycles of trauma he had to endure while growing up. Little did he realize that abandonment was no less painful for young Wes. However, the fact that Dean admits he went wrong and acknowledges his own fears suggests he is taking one step towards becoming a better father figure to Wes. He may not be able to make up for the lost time, but he can still strive to rebuild some trust and offer support whenever Wes needs him.
What One Fast Move’s Ending Means For Dean & Wes’ Relationship
They Have Fixed Their Relationship
One Fast Move‘s ending establishes that Wes will not suddenly forgive Dean for everything he did. However, now that he understands his reasons for abandoning him, he might be able to begin his journey of healing and not repeat his father’s mistakes. Unlike Dean, who grew resentful towards his father and later abandoned his family, Wes will likely approach his relationship with his father with a new sense of empathy. Dean, too, will try to turn his life around while being there for Wes as a supportive guiding figure.

Does One Fast Move’s Ending Set Up A Sequel?
One Fast Move Has A Well-Rounded Ending
Since One Fast Move is more about the relationship between a father and a son and less about bike racing, its ending feels quite conclusive. Owing to this, it seems unlikely that its sequel will ever see the light of day. However, if the film gets greenlit for a follow-up, the next installment could focus on Wes competing in bigger competitions while Dean struggles to give up his old toxic habits to support his son. In the One Fast Move sequel, the father-son duo can also encounter more personal and professional challenges as they set out to realize their shared bike racing dreams.
