‘Most subscriptions, most watched… It did very, very well for that platform,’ its director told JOE.
February 2025 saw the release of the sci-fi action movie The Gorge on Apple TV+.
The film stars Anya Taylor-Joy (Furiosa) and Miles Teller (Top Gun: Maverick) as Drasa and Levi, two highly-trained operatives – one Lithuanian, the other American – appointed to posts in guard towers on opposite sides of a vast and highly classified gorge.
Their mission: protect the world from an undisclosed, mysterious evil that lurks within the abyss.
Despite being ordered not to communicate with each other, loneliness gets the better of them, and they end up forming a bond from a distance.
When disaster strikes, however, the pair must venture into the unknown terrors of the gorge to save each other.
Also featuring amongst its cast sci-fi action legend Sigourney Weaver (Alien) and Sope Dirisu (Gangs of London), The Gorge was directed by Scott Derrickson (The Black Phone, Sinister) from a script by Zach Dean (The Tomorrow War).
And we’d argue it’s well worth seeking out thanks to its screenplay’s unique mix of action, horror, sci-fi and romance; the chemistry between Taylor-Joy and Teller; Derrickson’s stylish direction and the jittery electronic score from Oscar-winners Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross (The Social Network).
JOE recently caught up with Derrickson to discuss the trailer for his next movie, Black Phone 2. You can read his comments about the upcoming horror here.
During the interview, though, we also discussed the success of The Gorge. JOE noted to the director how the sci-fi action flick is still in the top five of Apple TV+’s movie chart months after its release.
In response, Derrickson said: “It shattered all their records, all of them – most subscriptions, most watched. It did very, very well for that platform.”
While acknowledging that the ending of The Gorge is quite definitive, we then asked the director if he would ever consider some sort of follow-up with the characters of Drasa and Levi.
“You never know! Never say never,” he told JOE, before adding; “But there’s no plan for a sequel that I know of at this point.”
Derrickson also told JOE that his earlier hit Sinister could be getting a sequel, with the filmmaker and producer Jason Blum having already had conversations about a potential reboot.
The Gorge is streaming on Apple TV+ now, while Black Phone 2 will be in cinemas on 17 October 2025.
