South Indian superstar Rajinikanth-starrer action thriller ‘Coolie’ is one of the most anticipated films of 2025. Directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, positive buzz around the movie and the power-packed trailer have soared the expectations. Ahead of its release on August 14, 2025, the makers are making sure to be careful with their promotional material. Even at the promotional interviews, the team is holding cards close to their chest and not revealing much about the film’s story. Rajinikanth’s ‘Coolie’ Plot Revealed

As per the synopsis revealed by Letterboxd, Coolie will see Rajinikanth in the role of Deva, the leader of a rising mafia gang. In the film, he devises a plan to reunite his old gang and take over. “An aging gold smuggler uses stolen tech hidden in vintage golden watches to revive his old mafia crew. But his plan to reclaim his empire spirals into something bigger, a new universe forged from crime, greed, and broken time,” the synopsis read. Even in the film’s promotional materials, watches and gold have been significantly featured.

On the other hand, the synopsis by Dandango seemed to add more depth to the story. It reveals that Deva seeks redemption for some of the wrongdoing of his past. “Delves into a man’s relentless quest for vengeance since youth, driven by righting past wrongs, shaping his very existence. Viewers experience the complexities of his tumultuous vendetta journey,” the synopsis on the US ticketing platform read.

Coolie’s Cast, Crew, And More

In addition to Rajinikanth, the film features an ensemble including stars like Aamir Khan, Nagarjuna, Shruti Haasan, Satyaraj, Upendra, Shoubin Shahir and others. Anirudh Ravichander has given the music while the story is written by the director himself. Coolie is Lokesh’s first collaboration with Rajinikanth. His last success was the Vijay-starrer ‘Leo’.
