Arnold Schwarzenegger’s “cult classic” action thriller The Running Man is on television tonight.

Based on Stephen King’s novel of the same name, the 1987 movie follows Ben Richards (Schwarzenegger) in a futuristic world as he participates in a deadly reality show to save his gravely ill daughter.

The story takes place in a dystopian United States, overrun by violence and poverty. In order to win a hefty cash prize, Ben must avoid being killed by a team of ruthless hunters during the game.

If you’re looking for a Friday night flick, The Running Man is airing tonight on Film4 at 10.50pm. It will also likely be available to watch on Channel 4’s free streaming service following its airing, though this isn’t guaranteed.

The ’80s movie received mixed reviews during its initial release but is now widely considered a “cult classic”. Fans have drawn parallels between the satire of the game show and today’s reality TV landscape.

One IMDB review described the movie as “a chilling and surprisingly realistic tale of reality TV gone mad”, adding: “It may have been far-fetched back then but not so now.”

The Running Man was meant to be a satire about game shows but its satire is more prescient now with the world of reality TV, 24 hour TV, and deep fakes,” echoed another viewer.

A third added: “Vintage ’80s, Arnie doing what he does best; undoubtedly now a cult classic, The Running Man hits you with nostalgia and awe.”

Meanwhile, the movie is set to receive a reboot this November, with Glen Powell stepping into Ben Richards’s running shoes. The upcoming adaptation boasts a stacked cast, featuring the likes of Josh Brolin, Colman Domingo, Michael Cera and William H Macy.

Directed and co-written by Edgar Wright, the action-packed trailer for the reboot teased drama, tragedy and lots of violence as Ben fights for his survival in a deadly and hectic game.

The Running Man is scheduled to be released on November 7.
