An Adventure Time movie is currently in the works, with development led by key creatives who are returning to the Land of Ooo. The animated series was created by Pendleton Ward, with the series starting as comedic adventures with Finn the Human and Jake the Dog before expanding in later seasons. Ending in 2018, the show was a major success, spawning the limited series Adventure Time: Distant Lands and the ongoing spinoff Adventure Time: Fionna and Cake.

Now, Variety has confirmed that an Adventure Time movie is in the works, with key creative leads from the original series coming back to develop the film. This includes Adam Muto, who was showrunner from season 5 to season 10, alongside Rebecca Sugar, creator of Steven Universe and Patrick McHale, co-creator of Over the Garden Wall. Although details on the film are sparse, it highlights the continued success of the series despite the main story being over.

The Adventure Time Franchise Is Expanding More Than Ever Before

In addition to the upcoming movie, two spinoff TV shows are being produced, both aimed at younger audiences. The first is a kids show titled Adventure Time: Side Quests, which will feature younger versions of Finn and Jake having standalone adventures from when they were little. The second is a preschool series called Adventure Time: Heyo BMO, following its titular computer character who makes friends when he moves to a new neighborhood. Coupled with the movie, it appears the franchise is about to reach a much wider audience than ever before.

While there’s no information yet on what to expect from the film, Adventure Time‘s best episodes always focused on character dynamics while also revealing more about the Land of Ooo itself. Because of this, the movie will likely retain the same tone as the show while giving audiences a story worth telling within the franchise. Since it’s unclear where the film will take place, it could be a new quest set during the show itself, or an epilogue similar to how Distant Lands approached their story.
