Big City Greens the Movie: Spacecation is a pefect family adventure film, packed with humor, heart, and catchy musical numbers.
Big City Greens the Movie: Spacecation is something that fans of the series will flip over, however it is also sure to introduce a new audience to the Greens. It tells a great father-son story, wrapped in an even greater family road trip story. The film has stunning animation, hilarious characters, and heartwarming themes of forgiveness and compromise. The pacing and writing expertly blend humor and emotion, as well.
When the film starts, it is vacation time for the Green family. Bill wants to go on the same exact road trip they went on the previous last year, despite Cricket making a pamphlet describing all of the wild and crazy adventures they could go on. This comes to no surprise as anyone who knows Cricket.
When the opportunity to go into space drops in their laps thanks to Gwendolyn Zapp, Cricket cannot help but take it. What follows is an absolutely bonkers, funny, and yes even emotional journey, into space. This isn’t just an animated comedy however, it is also a musical. Get ready to sing along and have songs stuck in your head for days, weeks, probably months.
Perfectly Blends Humor & Heart
When it comes to the story, it’s a brilliant way to force the Greens to spend some time together. Everyone has been on a family vacation before and it never goes perfectly. There’s always some kind of conflict or something bonkers happening. Anyone who has been on a road trip with their family can absolutely relate to this film. The story it has that classic Big City Green’s humor, but there’s a whole lot more to it as well.
As for the writing and pacing of the film, it is done extremely well. The way things play out is very smart. They drop breadcrumbs for you. But yet you’re still surprised in the end. There are moments of intense suspense and the stakes feel high.
As someone who watches Big City Greens with their family, this is a great family adventure. It’s a father and son road trip story, but we get a lot of Tilly and Gramma Alice classics as well.
Get ready to fall in love with an adorable space experiment named Cookie, who voiced by the very talented director Anna O’Brian.
Gwendolyn Zapp has always been a bit bonkers making her one of the funniest characters and that is no different in Big City Greens the Movie: Spacecation. Besides the Green family, she’s the most prominently featured, and basically everything out of her mouth is absolutely hilarious. There are moments where the stakes actually feel extremely high.
Fantastic Songs & Musical Numbers
Big City Greens the Movie: Spacecation is a musical, so we would be remise to not talk about the incredible songs. They fit into the plot points so perfectly, and as any good musical does, they propel the story forward through montages. The cast does a wonderful job singing these songs, which are sure to get stuck in your head immediately.
Often they add a bit of humor and fun, but there is one in particulat that will likely have everyone watching in tears. It is impossible to not relate to that one, and it is sure to hit hard and cut deep — but in a good way.
Do You Need To Have Seen Big City Greens?
Fans of Big City Greens, the show, are going to love this movie as it brings the same vibe. It’s silly, funny, and it always delivers an important message. Many well known characters make appearances and there are certainly some inside jokes present.
We were holding out hope to see the space chicken from a very early episode of Big City Greens floating around in the background somewhere. While we didn’t catch it, that doesn’t mean it isn’t there, so multiple rewatches are in order (and we aren’t mad at it).
That being said, for those who have not seen Big City Greens before, this serves as the perfect introduction to the Greens. The first few minutes are spent explaining who Tilly, Bill, Cricket and Gramma Alice are so that you have no burning questions as to their personalities or how they might act in certain situations.
This is a film that the whole family can sit down and enjoy, especially if they love the Greens. If you think Gramma Alice is wild, just waiting to see her with a robotic leg. We went in with extremely high expectations because Big City Greens is one of our favorite series, but the film did not disappoint. In fact, it somehow exceeded our expectations.
Overall Thoughts
Big City Greens the Movie: Spacecation is a blast for the whole family. Not only is it absolutely hilarious, it is going to pull at your heartstrings as well. Parents and children alike will be able to relate to its many themes including including forgiveness and compromise.
Big City Greens the series looks great, of course, but you can tell that this film is a little bit higher budget. Big City Greens the Movie: Spacecation puts everything it has into this film and it looks incredible. It may have taken three years to come to fruition, but boy, that was worth the wait. We can only hope for more big feature films featuring the greens from here on out
