“Hey, stick with me, you’ll be fine…” “You know where you’re going, right??” Rialto Distr. in New Zealand has revealed an official trailer for a fun comedy titled Bookworm, an adventure movie from New Zealand. This will open in NZ in August, but doesn’t have any other release dates internationally set anywhere else yet. Keep an eye out for it eventually anyway. Eleven year old Mildred’s world is turned upside-down when her estranged father, the washed-up magician Strawn Wise, comes to look after her and agrees to take her camping to find a mythological beast known as the Canterbury Panther. Elijah Wood stars as her kooky absent dad who returns home to her in New Zealand, with Nell Fisher as Mildred, and a small indie cast including Morgana O’Reilly, Michael Smiley, & Vanessa Stacey. Plus the beautiful NZ wilderness as a character and the backdrop. It’s impossible not to compare this to Waititi’s Hunt for the Wilderpeople, with the same kind of vibe as they venture into the wilderness to search for a mythical creature. Join them below.
Here’s the first official NZ trailer (+ poster) for Ant Timpson’s film Bookworm, from Rialto’s YouTube:
“Adventure called her name… unfortunately dad answered.” In the midst of a family crisis, a washed-up American illusionist (Elijah Wood) and his long-estranged precocious daughter (Nell Fisher) venture into the New Zealand wilderness in order to find a mythical black panther known as the Canterbury Panther. Bookworm is directed by the New Zealand indie producer / filmmaker Ant Timpson, making his second feature film after directing Come to Daddy previously. The screenplay is written by Toby Harvard. Produced by Emma Slade, Roxi Bull, Victoria Dabbs, Mette-Marie Kongsved, Laura Tunstall. This hasn’t premiered at any festivals or elsewhere, as far as we know. Rialto Distr. will debut Timpson’s Bookworm in New Zealand cinemas starting August 8th, 2024 coming soon. No US release date is set – stay tuned. Anyone into this?
