Smurfs Movie Review: Rihanna Brings Heart To Bumpy Yet Blue-Tiful Adventure

About Smurfs

Written by Pam Bardy and helmed by Chris Miller, Smurfs is a reboot of the Smurfs film series. The 2025 film follows the journey of the blue creatures on dedicated mission to save Papa Smurf. If you are planning to watch this adventure drama, read our full review here:

Smurfs Plot

Chris Miller’s rebooted version of Smurfs revolves around the blue-tiful creatures residing safely in the Smurfs Village. While everyone has a name, there’s only one blue creature called No Name. It’s because he doesn’t have a unique thing or special trait, which could give him an identity of his own. But he finds support from Smurfette, who frequently encourages him to realise his real value and inner strength.

Side-by-side, when Papa Smurf is captured Razamel, evil brother of Gargamel, all Smurfs unite on a mission to rescue him. What follows next is a series chaotic, heartwarming, (and some funny-unfunny) events that highlight how No Name slowly discovers his own strengths while on a mission to save Papa.

Smurfs Review: What Works

The heart of Smurfs lies in its warm message of kindness, and friendship. One of the major highlights of the Chris Miller’s movie is Smurfette and No Name’s bond. No Name often struggles with low self-esteem as he doesn’t believe that he has a defining trait like his fellow Smurfs.

However, Smurfette offers unwavering support to him on many occasions, which will remind you of your close buddies who stand by your side through thick and thin. Smurfette’s faith in him becomes an emotional backbone of the story, signifying how someone’s support can help a person rediscover their worth.

Rihanna brings heart and charm to Smurfette through her voice performance. She effortlessly captures emotional nuances of her character. And well, her original song, Friend of Mine, for Smurfs hits the right notes and so does the track Higher Love. Moreover, the film stands out in conveying the message that kindness is not a weakness; but a strength in difficult times. This optimistic message feels both timely and timeless.

Smurfs Review: What Doesn’t Work

The biggest drawback of Smurfs is that the film struggles with its storytelling. Although it shines in emotional arcs, the film falters at maintaining a strong momentum. Although it begins on strong note establishing the central plot-Papa Smurf being captured by Razamel-it eventually loses its sharpness . After Papa is captured, introduction of many characters and subplots don’t significantly add to the story. Having said that, the scenes are visually appealing.

At times, these narrative detours slow down the film’s pacing. One is pulled away from the primary mission too often. The backstories and side arcs create a sense of distraction rather building suspense. Due to these drawbacks, one goes through a bumpy ride as the film feels emotional and engaging in one moment, then wandering and sluggish the next.

Smurfs Review: Final Verdict

Smurfs shines in emotion and messaging but stumbles in execution. It’s Rihanna who brings much-needed heart and charm to this blue-tiful adventure.
