Angel Studios Unveils Presidential Biopic
Angel Studios is getting the party started early on the United States Semiquincentennial. The distributor has unveiled its first trailer for “Young Washington,” a biopic about the early life of George Washington — decades before he became commander of the Continental Army during the American Revolution and, later, the first President of the United States.
The trailer concludes with a narrated message, asking viewers to “Help us make this the No. 1 movie in America on its 250th” and directing them to Angel’s official website to preorder tickets. The film is slated to hit theaters on July 3 — a day before Independence Day 2026, which will mark the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.
Pre-orders have already been on sale for several months now, beginning with a promotional raffle that opened before “Young Washington” even started production. It’s highly uncommon for a theatrical release to open presales this far in advance, though Universal recently made a splash selling out Imax showtimes for Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey” an entire year before its July 2026 release.
“Young Washington” marks the first feature collaboration between Angel and the independent production banner and subscription service Wonder Project. The footage showcases William Franklyn-Mille in the role of Washington, fighting through intense battles in the French and Indian War and fending for himself in tense military meetings. The film also stars Mary-Louise Parker, Kelsey Grammer, Andy Serkis and Ben Kingsley. Jon Erwin, who created Wonder Project’s biblical series “House of David,” directs the film, from a script he co-wrote with Tom Provost and Diederik Hoogstraten.
“With this first trailer, audiences are getting their first real look at the scale, emotion and power of ‘Young Washington,” Brandon Purdie, Angel’s head of theatrical distribution and brand development, said in a statement. “It captures the tension, courage and humanity of a leader whose formative story has rarely been told on screen. We’re honored to bring this epic to theaters for America’s 250th anniversary and thrilled to see audiences already engaging and securing their seats to experience ‘Young Washington’ on the biggest screens possible.”
“Young Washington” will have its work cut out for it to lead the Independence Day box office next year. The film is opening two days after Universal and Illumination bow their latest animation juggernaut “Minions 3,” featuring the ever ubiquitous babbling yellow creatures. But Angel has beaten out Hollywood’s summer tentpoles before. Its human trafficking drama “Sound of Freedom” was the No. 1 film in North American theaters on the Fourth of July in 2023, out-earning Disney’s mega-budget “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.”
